Is Isaiah 34 and 35 Past, Present or Future?

Q: Has Isaiah 35 been fulfilled? Also in Isaiah 34 Edom is Mentioned. What is modern day Edom? Thanks have a blessed evening and morning.

A: Isaiah 35th Chapter mainly speaks about the FUTURE GLORY OF ZION. We see that the verse 1 to 4 says like this, "The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose; 2 It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, even with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the excellence of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the excellency of our God. 3 Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.  4 Say to those who are fearful-hearted, “ Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God; He will come and save you.”

Actually when Mark Twain visited Israel in the 1860's and wrote about it in his book "Innocents Abroad", he reported that Israel was a barren arid wasteland with hardly any trees. Nearly 2000 years of foreign conquerors had abused the land of Israel, having no respect for it. Today there are roughly over 400 million trees in Israel and rainfall has increased over 450% since the beginning of this century.

In these above first four verses we can easily note certain things which points its fulfillment to the present time nation of Israel that is becoming more and more glorious blessed with lush green vegetation, fruits, flowers and trees, thus even exporting it to other western countries (Isa 27:6). The following points justifies it is speaking about the present time in the nation of Israel, 1) The desert has blossomed only after Israel has become a nation in May 14, 1948 in which it was declared as the State of Israel. 2) The vegetation and exportation has ever since been increasing even upto our present time. 3) The Lord has promised to give excellency in abundance, joy and singing which points to the glrious Millenium rule of Jesus from the land of Israel. 4) Until then God has exhorted the weak hearted people to be strong without fear because Israel will go through increasing time of birth pang troubles from other nations, which will reach its zenith at the time of Great Tribulation (Zech 12:3; Jer 30:4-7). But God has promised to save Israel out of it in the war of Armageddon through Jesus and then right from Jerusalem Jesus will rule for a thousand years over the entire world (Zech 12:10-11; 14:1-4; Rev 19:11-16, 19-21; 20:4).

Then Isaiah 35th Chapter verses 5-10 clearly points to the fulfillment of the fullness of blessing in Zion when the Messiah of Israel will rule from Zion. Supernatural healing ministry of Jesus will continue in Jerusalem where He will residing and ruling the whole world with a "rod of Iron" (Isa 35:5-7; Rev 19:15). Vegetation of Israel will greatly prosper and increase to the point that literally "the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him who sows seed; the mountains shall drip with sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it." (Amos 9:13). In other words the time taken to plow today will be comparatively more than the time taken for the Millenim farmers to sow and reap the vegetation, in the same way the time it takes to sow the grapes seed today will be more than enough for the grape farmers to sow seed, make the plant grow and then tread the grapes during the Millennium rule of Jesus Christ. There will be so much grape available that people will use mountains to tread and extract grape juice in order to make wine from it. Such will be th quickness of plant growth during the Millenum time of Jesus rule. The "Highway of Holiness" will be establised right through out the world, so that from all the countries people can come on their yearly pilgrimage to Zion to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles and worship Jesus the King of the whole earth (Isa 35:8; Zech 14:16). No wild animals will be able to threaten the believing pilgrims who travel the road to Zion because all animals will become filled with the knowledge of God and will become transformed to Pre-Edenic Garden condition before sin entered the world (Isa 11:6-9).

Yes, Edom is mentioned in Isaiah 34:6. Chapter 34 promises the defeat of Zion's enemies--all of them--right up to the end of the world. But to illustrate and confirm the sureness of this victory of Zion over all enemies, Edom is presented as the historical object lesson. Edom suffered eternal extinction over 700 years after the prophecy was given.

The Wycliffe Bible Commentary on Obadiah confirms that judgment came upon Edom in ancient times, starting with the Nabatean invasion soon after the time of Obadiah:

“Soon after this time, Edom was pushed out of her ancient home by the Nabateans, so that she had to move to the west side of the Dead Sea.  Hebron was made the capital of her new home in south Judah.  The Maccabees, especially John Hyrcanus (c. 125 BC), subdued and Judaized the Edomites. They were finally destroyed with the Jews in 70 AD by the Roman general Titus.”

Edom is no more. Her treachery in assisting the Babylonians against their brethren, the descendants of Jacob, was repaid in kind by Babylonian treachery of turning upon their former allies, the Edomites, and conquering them, too. In Obadiah 15 the Lord said, "as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head."

The land of Edom lay to the south of the two tribe kingdom of Judah, between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea. Modern day Israel includes the western half of ancient Edom. The eastern half of ancient Edom is in modern day Jordan. The capital city of Edom was Bozrah.

During the Millenium a hell hole of fire, burning with brimstone forever shall be made as a memorial against the people who live in the same area of Edom for their hate and deceit against the nation of Israel, this will be done inorder to emphasize the surety of God's judgment over the enemies of Israel even during the Millenium and time ahead (Isa 34:6-10; Rev 20:7-10). This will be God's vengeance against Israel's enemies during the Millenium rule of Jesus which is called as "the day of the LORD's vengeance, the year of recompense for the cause of Zion" (Isa 34:8).
