Question: Is Jesus God? Did Jesus call himself as God?
Answer: Is Jesus God?
YES HE IS, BECAUSE HE CLAIMED HIMSELF AS THE I AM WHO WAS ALIVE BEFORE ABRAHAM WAS BORN (John 8:58)!
(1) Why Did Jesus Forgive Peoples Sin?
HE FORGAVE ALL PEOPLE, BECAUSE HE CLAIMED HIMSELF AS GOD IN THE FLESH (Matt 9:1-8).
In other words, if Jesus was not God in the flesh, he could not forgive peoples sins as this would be a blasphemy of the first kind, which the Jews understood rightly.
"Who can forgive sins but God alone?" is a phrase from the Bible, appearing in Luke 5:21 and Mark 2:7. The Jews thought that forgiving sins is easier, but healing a diseased is harder as anybody can speak, but only the power of God can be able to heal someone. So Jesus healed a sick person first in the above two references and then challenges these same people to believe that He was God in the flesh, and seeing it some may have believed, and still other people reacted with a mix of awe and anger as these religious people did not want to believe because of the religious dogma around them which may cause them to be thrown out of the Jewish worship place of the synagogues and also be ostracized from their community.
Then at another place, when Jesus forgave a sinful woman who approached him with great love and humility to serve Him. "48 Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”" (Luke 7:49). In the above verse, clearly Jesus expressed that those who love him a lot and serve him by faith will be given the highest gift of all, which is the salvation of their souls, which He is only able to provide it to them because Jesus is God in the flesh and is able to give wholeness to all humans, in all the realms of existence, who come to him in contrite spirit.
(2) Why Did Jesus Accepted Worship From People?
JESUS ACCEPTED THE WORSHIP OF ALL PEOPLE, BECAUSE HE CLAIMED HIMSELF AS GOD REVEALED IN THE FLESH (John 9:37-38).
Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad! “Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one!” (Deut 6:4).
This is known as the Shema – the most central prayer in Judaism. It is considered the main confession of Jewish faith.
The Shema is the very first prayer taught to a Jewish child when they start speaking, and it is the very last prayer a Jew is taught to say on their death bed. It also became especially noted for its dramatic usage during the Holocaust.
As such it is different to our Christian confessions, which usually are expressed in multiple series of declarations: “We believe, …” The Jewish confession, however, is not so much a “we believe” statement but a divine command to hear, to listen to the voice of God regarding who He is – the one true God. Intertwined with it is the command to worship no other God to be ever placed before him in equivalence or in substitution. To worship any man or any image is idolatry to the Jew and is forbidden, these Jews who understood well the commandments. Whenever people worshiped Jesus or whenever Jesus claimed divinity, they were angry at him because without revelation from God they just saw a human on the outside (Prov 29:18), but were never able to see through in to Him as their God in the flesh, as they were angry at him in the flesh and did not have the Spirit to focus upon Jesus who was God in the flesh (John 10:33).
From the beginning of Jesus’ life, we see examples of Him being worshiped. As soon as the Magi laid eyes on the infant Christ, “they bowed down and worshiped Him” (Matthew 2:11). When Jesus did a triumphant entry in to Jerusalem, people shouted and cried out, praise to Him as God's Messiah in the flesh who has come to save them all (Matthew 21:9; John 12:13). The word hosanna used by people from the Scripture, is a plea for salvation and an expression of adoration, and is therefore definitely a form of worship towards God in the flesh who is Jesus the Christ.
Jews believe in one God and monotheism is the name of the religious game for them. They tried their best to understand Jesus, but they could not fathom him because of their spiritual pride which made God their enemy. When Jesus walked on water and came near the disciples boat, those in the boat worshiped Him as the Son of God (Matt 14:33). After Jesus' resurrection, some women who saw Him alive, worshiped him as God in the flesh (Matthew 28:8-9; Mark 16:1; Luke 24:10). One of the main disciple of Jesus the Christ who later came to India and preached the Gospel, doubted so much about Jesus coming alive after his death. But when Jesus appeared to Him, this disciple whom people usually call lovingly as 'Doubting Thomas', touched the wounds on his hand to then worship him through his confession as God and Lord of his life (John 20:28).
Jesus never stopped anyone from worshiping him unlike the apostles of His who did, and the angels who were condemned for receiving the worship unlawfully from humans that only belong to God. Thus Jesus the Christ accepted the worship and adoration of all people as He was God in the flesh, then further Jesus openly declared Himself as the revelation of God in the flesh to all humankind through his Gospel (Acts 10:25–26; Revelation 19:9–10). We as Christians continue to offer worship to Jesus today by offering ourselves to Him as a living sacrifice (Rom 12:1-2), so that He could live within us through His Spirit and work through our spirit within us, which is the right kind of worship that God receives now, which we also do in [our] spirit and in truth [that we believe rightly through what Jesus teaches us progressively in our lives through His Word and Spirit] (John 4:24).
JESUS SAID 'I AND THE FATHER ARE ONE', IN EQUATING HIMSELF JESUS REVEALED THAT HE HIMSELF IS GOD REVEALED ON EARTH (John 10:30).
If Jesus was not God, He could not equate Himself with God the Father in heaven, for which the Jews wanted to kill him immediately by trying to stone him, because to them it is a blasphemy to death condemnation that Jesus has committed for which they took stones to stone Him, but praise God that Jesus escaped out of their hand supernaturally because His time to die did not come from God the Father (John 10:33).
Jesus equated Himself with God the Father in Heaven, because He has always seen Himself as the Second Person of the Trinity. The Jews never understood Trinity, as their whole outlook of revelation was just monotheism and not Trinitarianism like the Christians, which is the belief that God is one in essence of His Divine character and being, but three in person of their Divine Existence!
(5) If Jesus Was Not God, He Could Not Calm The Storm By One Rebuke?
BY CALMING THE STORM ON THE SEA AND WALKING ON THE WATER, JESUS CLAIMED HIMSELF AS GOD, AND ALSO EXPRESSED THE ALL POWERFUL AUTHORITY OF THE ALMIGHTY RESIDING IN HIM (Matthew 8:23–27, Mark 4:35–41, and Luke 8:22–25)!
The biggest thing of all was, nobody could control the environment of this planet earth except God, even though it can be tampered in to make believe by humans as we see in our modern times. But for the nature to be commanded and for it to obey the command, it could only be done by God in the flesh and none else could do it.
Thus Jesus exhibited the glory of the Son of God now and then in a limited way to prove that he was still the Second Person of the Trinity, and that He was God in the flesh to reveal the Creator God to all humanity (John 2:4, 11; 17:4, 5; John 21:24, 25). Praise the Lord!
Much Blessings...
