Question: Repentance, what does it really mean? Is repentance required for salvation or that is considered to be "works?"
Answer: Greetings in the most glorious Jesus name!
Repentance is a gift of God that we receive through faith, which when utilized by us the recipient, will bring a godly sorrow within our heart to make us turn towards God and in humility make us receive God's solution for our sin, and come out of the resultant crisis we are in that has separated us from God and His fellowship (Isa 59:1-2). God supplies this life changing gift to the sincere seekers who reach out to him by faith. This spiritual transaction happens when God speaks to them through his word, servants, etc... (Rom 10:17), when the recipients humble themselves before God enough to acknowledge their own unworthiness before God and His holiness and accept the perfect solution of God in Christ Jesus who justifies them for the Glory of God (Rev 3:19; Prov 1:23; 2 Cor 7:8-9; Heb 11:6; 6:4-6; 12:14-15; Luke 18:13-14).
What did Jesus say? "From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matt 4:17). REPENTANCE is NECESSARY, without it, we cannot know whether our FAITH is GENUINE or not (1 Cor 16:13; 2 Cor 13:5-6). Repentance is a gift of God that becomes active in us when we seek God sincerely to save us from sin BY FAITH THROUGH receiving His GRACE (2 Tim 2:25; Eph 2:8-9; Acts 11:18)!
Our godly sorrow leads us to repentance, which further leads us to salvation from sin (2 Cor 7:9-10). Praise the Lord! That is why we need to repent and be saved. Then we need to repent and be sanctified, repeatedly until we die and go on to be with the Lord. Then our reward will be great in heaven. Repentance cannot become a work as it is a perfect gift from God (Heb 12:16-17). During the event of salvation, part of the saving faith that we receive initially will have the repentance recipe added in it. During the process of salvation after we are saved, part of the sanctification faith will also have the repentance recipe added in it by God. Hallelujah!
Much Blessings....
