A: Clarke's Commentary says "Among the nations doomed to suffer from the hostilities of Nebuchadnezzar are the Philistines, (see chap. xxv. 20.) And the calamities predicted in this chapter befell them probably during the long siege of Tyre, when their country was desolated to prevent their giving Tyre or Sidon any assistance, 1-5. The whole of this chapter is remarkably elegant. The address to the sword of Jehovah, at the close of it, is particularly a very beautiful and bold personification, 6, 7."
The origin of Philistines of the Bible are from the Ham lineage and so are a descendants of Egyptians (Amos 9:7; Genesis 10.1,6,13,14). The Arab people of Gaza are of mixed lineage of these Egyptians descendants. We read in the book of Judges: ‘Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them… Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites…’ (Judges 3.1,3). These people were left in that land by God to test the nation of Israel. Today we have the Gaza strip filled with these people who were left there by the Lord to again test the Israelites whether they will accept the Antichrist's false covenant of peace with them (Dan 9:27). Sadly these Israelites will reject the true Messiah and will enter the Great Tribulation after which they will cry out for the true Messiah Jesus and He will finally come and save them physically and also spiritually (Zech 12:10-11).
So even though historically Jer 47 has been fulfilled, it will also be spiritually fulfilled during our end times where finally the sword of the word of Lord will judge these people who occupy these places in order to be a thorn in the flesh of the Israelites (2 Thes 2:8; Rev 19:21). In this way, Jer 47 is ofcourse also speaking about the current problems in Gaza and Israel.
