What Is The Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit That Cannot Be Forgiven?

What Is Sinning Against The Holy Spirit?

Question: What is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that cannot be forgiven? What is sinning against the Holy Spirit?

Answer: Greetings in Jesus wonderful name!

Let us get the context right, before we understand the whole matter.

Here is the place where the Matthew Gospel speaks about people committing sin against the Holy Spirit Matthew 12:22-35, " 22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David? 24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.” 25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. 30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.

31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

The same above incident has been described again in Mark 3:20-30 in nearly the same context. Some people say that when somebody speaks against working of miracles, demon-casting and prophesying of some so called man or woman of God who do it in Jesus name, they take the above verse to say that if they come against the ministry or speak negatively against the minister of God, they sin against the Holy Spirit, and that they who do it cannot be forgiven now in this age or in the age to come. Is this correct or taken out of context? In fact many miracle workers who have done these things are the ones whom Jesus in the white throne judgment of unbelievers say to them, that He never knew them and therefore He tells them to depart in to hell fire because they practiced lawlessness (Matt 7:15-23; Rev 20:11-15). So in context it cannot be as above, because by one's fruit each one will be judged at the end by Jesus, not by their gifts with which they lived in their lives. The saved will be judged for reward. The unsaved will be judged for works and will be proved in it as evil and worthless works which will disqualify them to prove, that they were never fit for heaven and condemns them to be only thrown in to hell fire.

So the hard question that we need to ask is, why did the Pharisees wanted to express their thoughts and attitudes toward Jesus and against his work of casting out demons?

It is all because the Pharisees were prideful of their religious power over people and wanted to control their dignity, and withhold that power by controlling their environment around them using it. When Jesus as the Messiah of deliverance and the Lord of all creation, was delivering people from the torture of Satan and demons which had bound so many people by unbelief of religious lies of the same Pharisees, who by their pride were allowing the same demons through their evil talk to distract oppressed to get away from Jesus, so that they were making the sin, sick and demon oppressed people from getting delivered from demon oppression through planting fear and unbelief in their heart. This prevented the work of the Holy Spirit in convicting them and turning them to repentance towards life. Jesus was very indignant of what was happening to the work of God, (i.e.) the conviction of the Holy Spirit to repent and receive life (John 16:8).

To such people like Pharisees who by pride wanted to distract other people from becoming convicted and converted to enter the Kingdom of God as a little child through their belief (Matt 18:6-9), they were instructed that it would be better for them to physically die which are only temporal judgment as a child of God by God's chastising hand and go to heaven after that (Heb 12:5-9; 1 Cor 11:29-32), rather than to live and one day die in unbelief without repentance to enter in to eternal hell fire with God's eternal judgment because of lack of self-judgment upon themselves even when they were alive to take a good choice and repent (1 Cor 11:32; 1 Pet 4:17-18).

So what was the "every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men"?

To turn the people from repenting for their sins and entering in to the Kingdom of God through spreading evil lies from their unregenerated heart of unbelief just like their lying father Satan that brings fear of the evil one in to the hearers heart to make them withdraw from truth and make these same people run away from the conviction of the Holy Spirit and repentance to life, without doubt are committing sin against the Holy Spirit (John 8:44; 2 Cor 7:10; 1 Cor 14:24; John 16:8-11; 1 Thess 1:5). In other words, people who stubbornly live in sin and lead others in to the sin of living without regret due to loving the deeds of their evil heart of unbelief are those who sin against the Holy Spirit (Heb 3:12-13), mostly such people have no other way to get saved as they are resisting the one Holy Spirit, who is the one and only helper given to humans to come out of sinful life and embrace the heavenly life of Jesus by turning away from sin, which is the only way out of hell fire to receive God's forgiveness and a chance of repentance unto life and thus forgiveness through which we enter heaven by receiving eternal life, and thus inheriting a forever unending relationship with God our Creator (2 Pet 2:12-17; 2 Cor 7:10; John 3:16; Luke 24:45-49). Hallelujah!

"Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" is conscious and hardened opposition to the truth, "because the Spirit is truth" (1 John 5:6). Conscious and hardened resistance to the truth leads man away from humility and repentance, and without repentance, there can be no forgiveness of any sin which includes the hardened heart of unbelief that leads to hell fire. The one who is going to hell in unbelief and have once entered it cannot ever come out of it eternally to ever receive forgiveness from God (Luke 16:22-25, 26, 27-31). In other words, only the sin of unbelief in the ungenerated heart that resists the conviction of the Holy Spirit to repent and get saved is the sin against the Holy Spirit that cannot be forgiven forever as they die without salvation to enter hell fire as unbelievers (Acts 7:51-54; 28:23, 24-27, 28; 2:36-39; Matt 25:41, 46).

All unrighteousness is sin that can be forgiven by God if repented, but there is a sin leading to death which is unbelief of the evil heart that cannot be prayed and delivered, but only through sharing the Gospel for the Holy Spirit to convict them to receive Jesus and thus be saved to receive eternal life (1 John 5:14-17). All humans who repent and receive God's forgiveness now in this age are actually forgiven of their past faults in the age to come, to live as righteous with God for the rest of their eternity (2 Cor 2:2-10; 6:1-2; John 20:23). Thus the unregenerated unbeliever cannot be forgiven of his earthly deeds in this age without repentance, or in the age to come because they will only be condemned in hell fire for their lack of repentance.

A unregerated unbeliever can act as though he is a good human forever and ever by living a religious life like the Pharisees, who lived acting as a good person to the world around them, but within them the poison of pride was stored in their unconverted heart to destroy others when they come in striking distance with unbelief (Luke 7:29-30), without love they express through their religious life that their lives belong to the evil one, and does not belong to God as He only makes people live by empowering them to receive His heavenly life through relationship with Himself and others who choose to love (1 John 3:12, 15; 4:7-8, 17-19, 20, 21). No matter how much the religious person acts as good person to the outside world, when the time comes for him to receive the truth, instead of accepting it in humility and repentance of heart, in the pride of his heart his mouth will speak against the truth to sin against the Holy Spirit through their mouth (Job 2:10; Luke 16:14-15). Thus God makes the tree good and its fruit good when they repent of their sins and receive eternal life in Christ Jesus. God also makes the tree bad and its fruit eternally bad, when they remain in unbelief until the day they die physically and then enter in to hell fire. When truth meets a unbeliever who does not want to repent (John 18:37-38), he will surely speak bad things or justify themselves by washing themselves of their hands of responsibility against those who carry God's light and good news to resist them just like they resist the Holy Spirit who speaks within their heart (Heb 4:1-2, 3, 6, 7, 11; John 1:4-5, 6-9; Matt 27:15, 17, 23-24, 26).

Much Blessings...
