If It Is Not Lawful To Marry One's Sister, Whom Did Cain Marry?

Did Cain Marry His Own Blood Sister In Sin?

Question : Cain's wife -- who was she? It is not lawful to marry your sister, so who did Cain marry? Where there other people on the Earth? Who lived in the land of Nod? Does this have any relevance to the Gospel?

Answer : These questions that we see above has been used by many atheists and infidels for ages to question the authenticity of the Bible and make others who have faith to be weakened by such questions. But the fact is, the Bible has more clear answers than many people think. Those who want to question the word of God because of a lack of faith will never be able to understand the mysteries that are hidden in the word of God.

First of all we must be able agree with the basics of the word of God so that we can freely delve in to deep,

1) Adam was the first man God created in this planet earth. Then God caused a deep sleep to Adam through a supernatural anesthesia injected by the power of His word, and then as the first supernatural master surgeon and crafts man, created the first woman out of the rib which He had taken out of Adam's body
(Gen 1:27; 2:22).

2) The Bible calls Adam as the
"first man" (1 Cor 15:47) and Eve as the "mother of all living" (Gen 3:20). In other words, there were no other men or women created by God than these two humans who were created in His very own image to rule the planet and fill it with God's children (Gen 1:27-28; Luke 3:38). Adam and Eve were the only means through which God wanted to fill the earth with people of god-kind of creatures who have the potential to produce more such creatures through a mystical union in God which He has instituted as a holy institution in the garden of Eden (Gen 2:24-25; John 10:34-35).

3) The Bible mentions only the first two children of Eve as
"Cain" and "Abel" by their name whom she bore to Adam initially because it was very significant to God and to all human kind (Gen 4:1-2).

The people who question "Who was Cain wife?" must read from the Bible the following verses which says,
"2 He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. 3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died." (Gen 5: 2-5). Here the life of the first man Adam who God created in His own spiritual image is being focused. When the verse 4 says, Adam "had sons and daughters", it clearly implies that not only Eve bore Cain and Abel and stopped procreating, but she continued to conceive more sons and daughters. The reason why only Cain and Abel were only called by name does have the following reason behind it, (i) They were the first two humans to come out of Eve who is the mother of all living beings. (ii) God wanted to convey a spiritual message about two streams of people who have come out of fallen human beings, the first boy Cain became a religious man who had no faith to please God. The second son Abel, became a God pleasing man of Faith (Heb 11:4). Because the second Son Abel who was the leader of this faith pack was killed by Cain the leader of faithless religion (Gen 4:8), God appointed the name of Seth in which the godly line again started to be counted because he was the son who was specifically given later as a promised one for the one who died which is Abel (Gen 4:5). Moses wrote these events by divine revelation from God and also there might have been a historical record that might have been kept and passed on by the ancestors of antediluvian period through Noah, and this is the reason these Genesis record just maintains the focus on the faith family of God and the evil which made God to destroy the evil men (Deut 31:9, 24-26; 32:44-47; Exod 17:14; 24:4; 34:27; Lev 26:46).

So Cain's wife must have been one of the daughter of Adam. Now a question might come up, 'How can Cain marry his Sister which God himself prohibited later in the Bible?' We must understand that solar and cosmic radiation, chemical and viral mutagens, and DNA replication errors, led to the multiplication of genetic disorders only after the water canopy that was kept as a filter to prevent harmful cosmic radiation from entering earth and maintain air-conditioned climate was completely removed by God during the flood
(Gen 1:7; 2:6). When the windows of heaven were opened all the waters which were above the heavens were drained in to earth to actually create that catastrophic flood (Gen 7:11-12). But then God displaced the entire earth to form more mountains in order to accommodate the excessive water (Is 40:12; Gen 7:20-21; 8:4; Hab 3:6). This is the reason two third of the earth is covered up with water now which initially was made up of a mass of land created to be inhabited with seas in the midst of it (Gen 1:9-10; Isa 45:18). According to God's initial design and institution of marriage, the only restriction that God had set is to keep a marriage covenant within the boundary of one man and one woman for life (Gen 2:24-25). God himself planned his creation to get multiplied through marrying a Sister and staying faithful for life to her initially (Gen 1:27-28). Even until flood men and women lived for hundreds of years because of God's favorable condition that he set on earth for man to live for ever. But as sin began to control men's mind (Gen 6:5-7, 11-13), God set a boundary of age limit to hundred and twenty as maximum limit for any man to live on earth (Gen 6:3). From this point onwards because of the lack of blessing upon the human bodies, the deterioration of DNA replication errors began to descend rapidly as a curse upon man. So it was right for Cain to marry his Sister and stay faithful to her for life, but then because of their lack of faith in the true Creator God, Cain's wicked and violent line of unbelievers were the first to promote polygamy and also violence through murder upon earth (Gen 4:23-24).

God severely prohibited incestuous relationship later, but only at the time of Moses when He constituted a law for His chosen people to follow so that their children's can be born in the pure image of God at least physically after the curse of the fall and the age-reduction decree has come to keep man's life limited to around 120 years of age to the maximum
(Leviticus 18; Rom 5:12; Gen 6:3). Even this age-reduction decree only began to take place gradually until all the men began to live within this one hundred and twenty years only. God declined this age blessing slowly after the flood and hit the exact 120 limit to the life of Moses through whom came the law to all mankind (John 1:17; Heb 9:19-21).

Some people who read the following verses which says,
"16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch." (Gen 4:16-17) would like to read in to the text and try to falsely speculate that Cain might have gone to the land of Nod where people were already there and got settled with them to produce a offspring and then he built a big metropolis through them.

The clear rendering of the text points towards only Cain and his wife separating themselves from the faith line of the true Jehovah God to follow their own religious way. As we have already seen, there can be no other person apart from Adam and Eve whom God had created in the Garden of Eden and blessed them to reproduce children, get multiplied throughout the earth and rule the earth as God's children and be the representatives of God. Once the curse of God to be a homeless wanderer began to take effect upon Cain
(Gen 4:12), it began to pull him away from the true faith system of worshiping God through the blood sacrifice of animals that God had instituted (Gen 3:21). Lack of faith will always take people away from the true faith of God's prescribed way of reaching him and will form its own religious way to reach God, God has not prescribed it and hates it too.

After Cain killed Abel, God banished him to the land of Nod
(Gen 4:9-12). The Hebrew word for 'nod' is related to the term meaning 'wanderer', therefore to dwell in the land of Nod means to take up a life of wandering -- becoming a nomad. When Moses wrote by Divine revelation about the land of 'Nod', he was describing about the whole earth outside the community of faith. The word 'and' is a conjunctive or combining connective word which means it is like a coin that has two sides to it. So when the Scripture says, "Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden", it is describing that because Cain left the faith system of God, he went east and started to live in a separate land with his own religious belief that was not accepted by God and is a false one. Again the phrase "dwelt in the land of Nod" can be translated as "dwelt in the land of wanderers [i.e. descendants of Cain]" or even as "Nod, the land of Cain [i.e. exile and wandering]". So Moses did not as much describe the physical location of a place but rather the type of people who came out of Cain lineage who lived with a separate belief apart from the Jehovah instituted faith on the earth.

Don't think that a city cannot come out of two people in a short period of time. It is not like our times and generation. A good Bible teacher Jack Kelley says the following about the situation of Cain's days, "By the way, don’t be fooled into thinking of families as they are today with a mom and dad and two kids. These people had 800 year life spans. If on average they only bore children during 200 of these years and only had one every 5 years they would have died with over 2 million descendants each. Multiply that by just the number of people the Bible names and you have a huge population. Remember, they were told to be fruitful and fill the earth
(Gen. 1:28)."

On the whole Cain built this city of Nod and his descendants were the inhabitants of this city as we have already seen
(Gen 4:16-24). I believe that Cain began to build a city in a hope to keep his religious system from getting demised. It was actually in a direct rebellion to the word of the Lord which was not to live in cities but to multiply and spread across the earth to rule it (Gen 1:28). Only in the city culture sin can prevail more easily (Gen 4:7), so Satan had a direct influence through Cain to build this city and keep the false religious crowd through music, meeting all their immediate needs of survival through making them domesticate animals for poultry, cattle rearing for milk, bronze and iron utensils for household cooking. Such satanic works only promoted violence in the community of Cain's descendents and became totally sold out to fulfill the will of Satan (Gen 4:23-24). Cain was never destined to be born again to posses eternal life and therefore freely practiced religious tradition to coverup his violent evil nature and satisfy himself with a false religiosity to ease his conscience (1 John 3:12-15).

The relevance to the Gospel this story of Cain has is, receive the true faith of God through Jesus to become His children and rule the earth in the coming days
(Gen 1:27-28; John 1:12-13; Rev 2:26; Matt 25:21, 23, 34). Do not allow sin to reign over you and make you insensitive towards God and his righteous way of living, like Cain allowed it and was taken captive by it for life (Gen 4:7). Any religious tradition that a man has outside of the true God's prescribed faith to inherit eternal life through believing in His only begotten Son will lead him to live in the land of wandering only. Outside of this true God prescribed system of faith, presence of God can never be felt even for a moment in one's life (Gen 4:16; Heb 9:24; 10:19-25). The spiritual land of Nod in our times is the life lived on earth without the true God living inside us. It is a living hell to live without God, but wandering people will realize it only later in the real hell fire if they keep rejecting the true faith of God that comes to one's heart through Jesus Christ.

May God help us to live worthy of Him by faith on earth now, so that we might inherit His Glory to be with Him forever as his friends and children. Praise the Lord!
