Is There Anything You Can Do To Disappoint The Lord?
Question : Is there anything you can do to disappoint the Lord? If the Lord always sees you as perfect in His sight, is there any way for you to disappoint Him? I've heard it said that we can only grieve or disappoint Him by not trusting His grace, but according to your message, hasn't that sin been forgiven as well?
Answer : We can do nothing more to disappoint the Lord than not believe His Word and live in unbelief, because God Himself has revealed in His Word that He is pleased only with our faith (Heb 11:6). The sin that God calls and considers as great evil is the sin of unbelief (Heb 3:12). Faith can come in to us when we hear the Word of God which God quickens and speaks within us to our heart personally (Rom 10:17). A few devoted Jews at the time of Jesus' ministry thought that by doing something, they could please God and get His favor to do some great work for God and asked Jesus, "28 ..., “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” (John 6:28). To such misconception "Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”" (John 6:29). In other words Jesus was saying to these people and all the people of the religious world that wanted to please God that if they believe in Jesus whom God has sent to speak the very words of God to prove that He is the one who was spoken by the whole Old Testament Scriptures as the one who is going to come, then God automatically gets pleased by seeing that they are believing God's final messenger, Savior and the Messiah in obedience to God. Thus when someone does not believe Jesus, that is the biggest disappointment to the Lord because the Lord knows that they cannot be brought to personal friendship with Himself without their faith in Jesus (1 Tim 2:3-4).
God knows the end from the beginning, because He is like a Divine Movie director who has written the story line from the beginning to the end of this world and also the end of this present earth (Isa 46:10; 2 Peter 3:5-12). Just because He knows the end from the beginning doesn't mean that God has no emotions to feel sad when people make bad choices. God has not destroyed evil until now in judgment because He loves every human being who are made by Him in His image (James 3:9), though they are marred by sin still He wants every human being to repent from sin and come in to relationship with Him and receive His forgiveness, or else why should He sincerely desire and wait for them (1 Tim 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9)? So just because God knows the end because of His Divine Foresight doesn't make Him any less emotional than He is to feel the sadness when his offer is rejected and rejoice in great happiness when He finds people saved from sin and come in to friendship with Him (Luke 15:7, 20, 32). If we humans do express so much emotions after someone sick dies at the appointed time the doctor's said by their diagnosis, how much more God who is the "Father of all human spirits" in whose likeness we are created will feel bad when people reject salvation even though He knows the end of someone from the beginning (Heb 12:9; Eph 4:6).
Then Grace wasted will also disappoint God but that will never frustrate Him from giving more grace if the person who has wasted it all comes back to ask for and receive more grace from Him (1 Cor 15:10; 2 Cor 6:1; Rom 5:20). God has unlimited grace with Him and He is the richest person in the universe, He wants to show His benevolence to all His human children who come to Him in repentance. In fact He is eager to give His grace than we are to receive it.
Even the disappointment that we give to God by wasting His grace has been once and for all time forgiven by Him at the Cross of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 5:7; Heb 10:12, 14), that is why God now only corrects by punishing His children whom He loves, but never is angry against them for their sin as He has already forgiven them all (Heb 12:6; Rom 3:25-26; Isa 54:9; Eph 4:32). When all our sins are already forgiven by God, there is no more sacrifice to be done anymore except freely give ourselves as a living sacrifice to Him in service (Heb 10:15-18; Rom 12:1-2).
The Lord sees us as perfect in Christ Jesus, so that we might have the liberty to give ourselves freely to be filled with His grace and be used for Him in willing service without any fear in love. The Lord through His mighty grace is able to make a turn around anytime we give ourselves fully to Him in every area of our life, and thus He is able to make even the disappointments we have given to Him in to an appointment for the future humility in our Character to be built and be used in much more effective way as though we have never lost anything at all by our failures in pleasing God (1 Tim 1:15; 1 Peter 5:5-6; James 4:6-10; 2 Peter 1:9-10).
