Is Hebrew The Oldest Language?

What Language Did Adam And Eve Speak?

Question : What Language did Adam and Eve Speak? Is Hebrew the Oldest Language?

Answer : Greetings to you in Jesus wonderful name! There are no answers for the question asked above, outside the Bible inference through which we can come to a strong conclusion about it. One reason we cannot say that a particular language was the one spoken by Adam and Eve right away because we were not present at that time with them (Job 38:4).

The Bible says that before God confused people's language at Babel because of their rebellion against God, "...the whole earth had one language and one speech." (Gen 11:1). Language separation in all the world happened only after this time.

So we can infer from the above that the one language that these people were speaking might have been the one language which might have come from the time of the beginning in which Adam and Eve were the first humans, out of which all humans got multiplied. Noah and all his sons must have spoken the same language that these people have spoken.

God call Himself as "The God of Shem" through the prophetic blessing of Noah to his son Shem (Gen 9:26) and said Yahweh the God of the Hebrew would "dwell in the tents of Shem" (Genesis 9:26-27), then we see that Ham the father of Canaan was cursed by God for seeing his father's nakedness and he was placed as a servant to both Shem and Japheth the other brothers. Japheth was prophetically blessed with enlargement and friendship with Shem's descendants.

The Richness Of The Hebrew Language

McClintock and Strong’s Bible Commentary says of Shemitic (Semite) languages: "The Hebrew language takes its name from Abraham’s descendants, the Israelites, who are ethnographically called Hebrew....In the Old Testament it is poetically called the language of Canaan; Isaiah 19:18, emphatically the language of the holy land consecrated to [Yahweh] as contrasted with that of the profane Egypt. In its earliest written state it exhibits in the writings of Moses a perfection of structure which was never surpassed." Further, this commentary states that it was the descendants of Shem who spoke Hebrew and other Semitic languages, of which are listed 14 primitive dialects.

The conciseness, simplicity, energy, and fertility of the Hebrew can be seen by examining the names of the individuals appearing in the early chapters of Genesis. All are Hebrew! Adam means "red" or "ruddy." Eve (Heb. Chavah) means "life," or "lifespring." Just look at the names of other Old Testament personalities and you will see that they all have Hebrew meanings.

Hebrew Names       English Meaning

Adam
Man

Seth
Appointed

Enosh                        Mortal

Kenan                        Sorrow;

Mahalalel                    — The Blessed God

Jared                          Shall come down

Enoch                        Teaching

Methuselah                — His death shall bring

Lamech                     The Despairing

Noah                         Rest, or comfort.

That's rather remarkable:

Man (is) appointed mortal sorrow; (but) the Blessed God shall come down teaching (that) His death shall bring (the) despairing rest.

Here we see from the name of Adam to Noah, the Gospel is hidden within the names of the genealogy in Genesis! No one can do such wonderful alignment of the true message of the Gospel in the meaning of the names of the people lived, except God who gave them their names according to the times they lived prophetically conveying the future message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We can come to understand from these mysteries, that Hebrew was the language of the beginning of all mankind.

Shemites And The Hebrew Language

The lineage of Shem is the key showing that Hebrew is the heavenly language that has come from God to Adam and Eve. Shem means, "name" in Hebrew, and it was the Shemites (Semites) who continued with Hebrew as the language of their name with which they called themselves. Noah called Yahweh the "Elohim of Shem," and said Yahweh would "dwell in the tents of Shem," Genesis 9:26-27. Yahweh, is of course the mighty one of the Hebrews! Names do not change but remain the same from language to language. Neither should names be translated. Yahweh is the Mighty One of the Hebrews, and His Name is the same no matter what language is spoken.

We find this confirming statement in The New Bible Dictionary, J. D. Douglas, editor: "Hebrew belongs to the western group of Semitic languages (the word Semitic is formed from the name of Shem, Noah’s eldest son)," p. 710.

Shem, whose native tongue must have been Hebrew, lived 98 years during his Great-grandfather Methuselah’s time. Remember, the earth was one language at this time. Shem had nearly 100 years to carry on a discourse with, and receive instruction from his great-grandfather. Methuselah lived and shared a 243-year span with Adam, and another 600 years with Noah. Noah lived 350 years after the flood, and died only two years before the birth of Abraham. Noah’s son Shem lived until Abraham was 150 years old, and Isaac was 50 years of age. So there is no denying how Abram was called as “Abram the Hebrew” (Ge 14:13).

Here is more confirmation: we find in Genesis 10:21 that Shem is the father of all the children of Eber. From "Eber" we get the word "Hebrew" (NIV note on Gen. 10:21; Companion Bible note on Gen. 10:24, among others). Eber was a Hebrew and spoke Hebrew. So did his great-grandfather Shem. Parents always pass down their language to their children, and so on. Shem would speak the same language that his great-grandfather Methuselah spoke, with whom he shared 98 years of his life in the homeland. Methuselah would speak the Hebrew language that Adam spoke, with whom he shared 243 years of his life.

World Divided But Shemites Remain

God brings the story of division of all languages as an interlude as how the world has got divided by languages, and then starts the descendants of Shem which He separates and highlights after this confusion to make us infer and understand that by the end of all confusion (Gen 11), God has separated this pure language people who have been from the beginning to start with one man among them all who feared Him and He promised him to make him a great nation for His own glory (Gen 12:1-3).

Abraham obeyed God and thus God calls Him as “Abram the Hebrew” (Ge 14:13), who, in turn, was descended from Noah’s son Shem (Ge 11:10-26). No other language God calls by name anywhere in the Scripture to identify a particular person who speaks it, but Abram was identified by the language he spoke to make us understand that God found a man among the whole earth [i.e. which years and centuries before spoke that one language and one speech] a just man who obeyed Him wholeheartedly to carry on the honor of carrying the title of the people of the language of the beginning or the God who spoke this Shem's language.

We know from Gen 10:32, 25, "32 These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood...25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan."

So according to the above verses, the confusion and scattering all over the world by languages in Gen 11:1-9 have happened after Noah's flood in Gen 10:25 where God the Lord in the days of Peleg not only confused the language of all the earth and from Babel He scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth, but also He finally divided the earth in the way we see today with five different continents so that it will be hard for the people of one nation to cross the ocean and enter in to another nation of another continent with another language to join hands in rebellion of idolatry against the Creator God (Acts 17:26-27).

The families of Ham and Japheth settled in the plains and seacoasts. The descendants of Shem, however, did not dwell in the plains of Shinar, but settled toward the mountains in the hill country of Mesha: "And their dwelling was from Mesha, as you go unto Sephar a mount of the east." (Gen. 10:30). This is one of the clue we have where the sons of Shem were settled, (i.e.) away from the rebellious Tower builders. So the Shemites stayed in the high country, much as did Abraham later, Genesis 13:6-12. They were not in the area of the Tower of Babel. Genesis 10 tells of Nimrod, the son of Cush, the son of Ham, who began his kingdom in Babel in the land of Shinar, verse 10. Construction of the Tower of Babel was the project of sons of Ham and Japheth (Gen 10:5), under the directions of Nimrod (Gen 10:8-12). Scholars assert the Shemites were persecuted by Nimrod, and dwelt apart (Beechick, Adam and His Kin, page 118-123). Children learn the language of their parents, so the Shemites who worshiped Yahweh God till Abraham were those Hebrew speaking people in whose time Shem the father of Shemites too lived. Shem lived actually 98 years before the flood, 502 years after the flood, and 75 years after Abraham entered Canaan. I believe God separated Abraham from the other Shemites because they started to slide down in to idolatry around that time even after knowing the true God Elohim as their Creator and Yahweh as their Lord (Joshua 24:2-3; Ezek 16:2-3).

God Foresaw Israel Speaking Hebrew When The World Got Divided

We know the Bible says in Deut 32:7-8, "7 “ Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; Your elders, and they will tell you: 8 When the Most High divided their inheritance to the nations, when He separated the sons of Adam, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the children of Israel. 9 For the LORD’s portion is His people; Jacob is the place of His inheritance."

Here in the above verses Moses writes and conveys that when the Lord divided the boundaries of the nations of the sons of Adam during the confusion of Babel as we have seen above, God prophetically foresaw the Hebrew people and their numbers which would increase at any point of time in the future, and according to the number of the children of Israel He separated the sons of Adam and their boundaries for them to live in all the world. In others words, these were people chosen by the Lord for Himself as these Israel people were called as "The Lord's portion...His people...place of His inheritance," which again leads us easily to infer that the one language that the world has spoken in the past was retained by God in His people group which speaks Hebrew language in the portion of land He has given them.

In the Book of Exodus they were called in Egypt by their language as "Hebrew midwives....Hebrew women...Hebrews' children...Hebrew men" (Exo 1:15, 19; 2:6-7, 13). When God gave a written revelation of Himself and His creation, He gave it to Moses in the Hebrew language to make us understand that it was the language of the beginning of the whole world (Mark 10:3; Luke 24:27; John 1:17). Moses must have had access to patriarchal records and must have compiled it in order, preserved by being written on clay tablets and handed down from father to son via the line of Adam—Seth—Noah—Shem—Abraham—Isaac—Jacob, etc., as there are 11 verses in Genesis which read, 'These are the generations [Hebrew: toledoth = 'origins' or by extension 'record of the origins'] of…'The Jewish people, from earliest biblical times to the present day, have always regarded this portion of Genesis as the true record of their nation's history. So all of the above people must have spoken and also have written the records in Hebrew language for Moses to do all the compilation under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

The Ten Commandments were written with the finger of Elohim on two tables of stone and then given to Moses. They were written in the Hebrew language. Israel stood before Mount Sinai and listened as Yahweh spoke in a language they could understand.

Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible in Hebrew. This helped unify the Israelite's and also establish Hebrew is the language of the Temple and worship in the synagogues.

"These are the generations of...." which are described 11 times in Genesis always conveys a written record passed on generation after generation because the word "generation" is a translation of the Hebrew toledoth, and it means essentially "origins," or, by extension, "records of the origins." And so we can easily infer how Moses would have been able to compile the Book of Beginning which is Genesis (Gen 2:4; 5:1; 6:9; 10:1; 11:10; 11:27; 25:12; 25:19; 36:1; 36:9; 37:2).

Thus it is probable that the Book of Genesis was written originally by actual eyewitnesses of the events reported therein except Adam who must have had the revelation of the creation of God conveyed by God to him in a vision and must have written it as he was the perfect adult son of God in the beginning (Luke 3:38). Adam was no cave-man who evolved and learned his language by grunts and grins! Adam knew enough horticulture “to dress and to keep” the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15), and ample intelligence to recognize and name the distinct kinds of animals (Genesis 2:19). He (and Eve) could converse with God without ever having learned an alphabet, and there is no reason to suppose that he was not fully skilled in writing also, with which we can infer that the first language of God must have been Hebrew with which God wrote the whole written revelation of Himself presently known as the Old Testament and gave it to the whole world through this Hebrew nation (Eph 2:11-12; John 4:22; Isa 65:1).

How Could Hebrew Be The Language Of The Beginning?

Here is how Hebrew could be the language of the beginning, (1) "The generations of the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1-2:4), (2) "The book of the generations of Adam" (Genesis 2:4b-5:1), (3) "The generations of Noah" (Genesis 5:1b-6:9), (4) "The generations of the sons of Noah" (Genesis 6:9b-10:1), (5) "The generations of Shem" (Genesis 10:1b-11:10), (6) "The generations of Terah" (Genesis 11:10b-11:27), (7) "The generations of Isaac" (Genesis 11:27b-25:19), (8) "The generations of Jacob" (Genesis 25:19b-37:2) and (9) "The generations of the Sons of Jacob" (Genesis 37:2b-Exodus 1:1). Because all of these above people come in the same line and same language group for a long time, they were able to pass on their genealogy to one generation after the other to the time of Moses who collected it all and have compiled it under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

God said that He will restore the pure Hebrew language to the nation of Israel once again after they were scattered in all the world, through the promise given by Him in Zep 3:9, "For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, that they all may call on the name of the LORD, to serve Him with one accord." The Living Bible says, “At that time I will change the speech of my returning people to pure Hebrew so that all can worship the Lord together.” The above verse is being fulfilled in our generation after the regathering of all Jews from all the world who immigrated in to it with all the different languages of the whole world, but now you can walk through those cities in Israel where you hear them speak one language, and it’s Hebrew. This shows that God wanted always the nation of Israel to identify with the language of Hebrew because that was the language with which God spoke in the beginning to create the world and communicate with human beings and He wants to retain that over the portion of the land which He calls as "The Lord's portion...His people...place of His inheritance." Hence we infer in to this question to deduce that there has always been a particular people in all generation speaking Hebrew the language of the beginning through which Abram came and did speak the Shem’s language unaffected when God confused the language of the disapproved people at Babel (Gen 11:5-9).

"In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of Canaan, and swear to Yahweh of hosts..." (Isaiah 19:18). The Living Bible, among others, declares that the language of Canaan is Hebrew. Those who want to know the Lord in those days of Jesus Christ thousand years of His earthly kingdom and want to keep themselves from rebellion for which wrath of God will be sent towards them (Zephaniah 3:8; Zech 14:16-19), they will learn Hebrew and will constantly obey the decree and orders of the King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev 19:11-16), who is Yahweh the mighty one of Israel!

The law of God will go out of the Millennium temple of Jesus Christ to the whole world in Hebrew (Isa 2:3; Mic 4:2). Hallelujah! GLORY TO "The God of the Hebrews" (Exo 5:3)! Of course as old as the God of the Hebrews Himself is in this world, so is the language in itself in this world. As God is the beginning and the end of all things, the Hebrew language which was the one world language before the Babel confusion which brought in all different languages of the world, so I believe that during the millennial reign of Jesus Christ with which the present earth will end at the end of it (2 Peter 3:10-13), so once again the one world language of the Millennium will be the Hebrew language, at least in enforcement!

Much Blessings.....
