Were Shemites Also Part Of The Rebellion At Babel?
Answer : Greetings to you in Jesus name! We know that in the days of Peleg the earth was divided as the present five continents we see (Gen 10:25), before that the world had plains and mountains on one side and the group of seas on the other side from the days of creation and I believe that the flood would have altered it to some extent but the final division was done intentionally by God to keep men from rebelling against Him and therefore grope for the true God and find Him because of their own limitation and their heart desire to know the unknown eternal God personally (Gen 1:10; Acts 17:26-27, 23). I believe that the Shemites dwelt separately, and at least a particular line of men who were again mentioned as Shem's Descendants in Gen 11:10-27 till “Abram the Hebrew” (Ge 14:13) comes after the interlude of the scene of confusion of 'The Tower of Babel' in Gen 11:1-9, it shows that even if there are many Shemites who would have got separated and joined themselves in the rebellion of Babel, yet at large God separated this one particular line of Hebrew speaking people even up to Abraham to keep that original tongue of Hebrew to continue through them as they were godly people seeking the true God who created the heaven and the earth.
We know that when these separated line of Shemites of Terah's Descendants too started to slide down in to idolatry after a period of time along with their true belief of Yahweh Elohim (Gen 11:27-32; Jos 24:2-3; Acts 7:1-2), then God starts a new line of Hebrew speaking people who are devoted to Him through Abraham who became later the Father of this faith Household (Gen 12:1-4; Rom 4:16; Gal 3:29).
Yes as you mentioned above, this verse "these were the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations" (Gen 10:31) shows that many of the Shemites have been part of the rebellion at the tower of Babel and therefore got separated in to "families, languages, lands, nations..." in plurality which confirms their part in it.
But the truth here we need to understand is, God has kept a separate people and preserved the one language and one lip of the original creation which is Hebrew language for Himself and took out of those people Abraham who obeyed Him and was devoted to Him completely. The preservation of God up to “Abram the Hebrew” (Ge 14:13), where the need for genealogical continuation ends for Terah's Descendants shows that the miracle of God made these few godly people preserved as they were all originally residents of the land stretch from Mesha towards Sephar the mountain of the east (Gen 10:30).
So we know that even though many Shemites back-slide in to rebellion against God in taking part of building the Tower of Babel, yet by God highlighting some of Shem's Descendants separately after mentioning the confusion of the Tower of Babel, He has show us that a godly generation of Shemites were preserved by Him and therefore always existed speaking Hebrew language even up to Abraham the Hebrew.
Much Blessings.....
