What Is The Purpose Of The Bible?
Question : What is the purpose of the Bible?
Answer: Greetings in Jesus wonderful name! There are manifold purpose for which God has given His word to us. The following are some of the most important purposes,
1) TO KNOW THE ONE TRUE GOD AND BE SAVED
God says in His Word, "Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other." (Isa 45:22). In other words, God is calling the world to come to Him through His Word and invites all the world to get saved from sin and death. God affirms through His Word that there is none other person in the entire world to go and get saved for eternity except Him and His name Jesus which has been given to all men (Acts 4:12).
2) TO KNOW THE SINFULNESS OF ALL HUMANS
God reveals through His Word that all humans are born in sin and live in sin, there is not even one righteous man found before God (Psa 51:5; Eccl 7:20; Rom 3:23). One man the forefather of all of us humans sinned and disobeyed God in the beginning, and due to that sin death has spread to all men, the Bible says (Rom 5:12). In other words, we are not sinners just because we sin, but rather we sin because we are sinners by nature. Like a mirror the Word of God shows the true face of our inner heart spiritually, so that being convicted we may once again beautify ourselves in God's righteousness (John 16:7-11, 13; Jam 1:23-24; Php 3:9).
3) TO HELP US GROW SPIRITUALLY
Paul the apostle revealed the source and the purpose for which God has given all Scripture saying, "16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Tim 3:16-17). Thus we can easily come to understand that only the Scripture can help equip a believer to grow spiritually to do every work that God has planned for His life and ministry to others. And also it is the only means by which men and women of God can use it to equip others.
4) TO BE CLEANSED BY THE POWER OF IT
God asks through Jeremiah, "Is not My word like fire?" (Jer 23:29). In other words, God is revealing here to make us understand that His Word has the power to burn evil and remove it from the earthly lives that we live if we let the Word of God to do its work within our heart. Jesus also told that His Word has washed his disciples from all filth, then Jesus prayed to the Father to sanctify his disciples through His Word, and in another place the Word of God is compared to water that washes all uncleanness and dirtiness that comes within all humans (John 15:3; 17:17; Eph 5:26).
5) TO ENLIGHTEN THE HEART OF ALL MEN
The whole world is under the power of darkness of Satan and his demons, the Bible reveals (1 John 5:19). To shine God's light and guide the daily walk of all humans in God's Divine path to life, God has given the Word as a light to enlighten the path of our spiritual life (Psa 119:105, 130).
6) TO COMFORT AND STRENGTHEN OUR HEART SPIRITUALLY
In case of injustice, loss, defeat, sickness, sin and death, the Word of God comforts our soul just as if God is sitting beside us and comforts us in all our tribulation (Psa 119:50; 1 Thess 4:18; 2 Cor 1:3-4). The best way to deal with any kind of hardships, tribulation or chaos in one's life is to get deeper in to the Word of God.
7) TO GIVE US LAWS THAT REVEALS THE RIGHTEOUS DEMANDS OF GOD, AND RESTRAIN US FROM SIN
God has revealed His righteousness "in the law" (Php 3:6). To all humans who want to keep the law of God to please God, they will be led to Christ and be saved through Him (Gal 3:24). Paul says, "What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator." (Gal 3:19). The law kept people restrained from sinning freely, the law was given until Jesus would appear, thus once Jesus came to this earth, from that time onward we can see that the law was effective to work in a human until a sinner would come to know Jesus and find the true righteousness of God through Christ by faith (Gal 3:24-25).
Much Blessings....
