Are There Any Commandments To Keep In The New Testament Like The Ten Commandments In The Old Testament?

Question: Thanks for your continual guidance. I have a question, some people say that there are no commandments to keep except one commandment in the New Testament. What does it mean? Does it mean that there are no commandments like in the Old Testament where Ten Commandments are emphasized to be kept mandatorily? Can you give a list of New Testament Commandments if there is something available to keep or practice? Thanks in advance.

Answer: Greetings in the awesome name of Jesus Christ!

To say that there is only one commandment in the New Testament in one way is absolutely true in a comprehensive sense, but in a specific personal sense there are nearly 684 passages that teaches us to keep these commandments not as a law of sin and death, but as a law of the Spirit (Rom 8:2). What is the difference between the two? One law is something that is kept by our strength with out any help or dependence on God to please God, the other is to accept that we in ourselves cannot keep the law by our strength and surrender ourselves to God and let Him keep His commandments through us by the Spirit who gives us the strength to keep it and please Him by our faith (Heb 11:6; Rom 12:1-2; Gal 2:20; Php 4:13).

What is that one commandment and the most important of all?

Jesus showed which is the great commandment in the law when He intertwined together two and made them to be one when he said, "37 ..., “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matt 22:37-40). In other words Jesus was clearly telling us all that when we love God with all heart, soul and mind, and when we love our neighbors as ourselves, we are keeping all the commandments of the whole Bible comprehensively. That doesn't mean that there are no more commandments to keep specifically in various situation which the Holy Spirit reveals, but it does mean that when we continue to study deeper all the commandments that Jesus taught us all, it all leads to one commandment which is love God and love your neighbors.

Love is emphasized as the royal law by apostle James in his epistle where he says, "8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well; 9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment." (Jam 2:8-13). Here in the above Scripture, James emphasizes that those who religiously keep the law, actually fail in their spiritual life, that even if they keep the whole law and stumble in one sin, they have become transgressor of the law being convicted by the very law they keep. That is why He teaches the Christians to keep the royal law that fulfills all law, when they learn to love their neighbors as themselves, showing no partiality to them if they are poor, then the mercy they show to others triumphs over the judgment that comes to them when they try to keep the law and wrongly try to justify themselves through it because of the weakness of their old Adamic nature of sin within which never pleases God (Matt 5:7). In other words, when a person is merciful to others, God shows them mercy in their own lives when they are in need standing before the perfect judgment of God. Now to the person who works the law and try to justify Himself before God, whether before salvation or after they are saved (Gal 3:3-5), God never likes that attitude of pride (Luke 18:9-14; 16:14-15), and therefore counts the wages of such works as debt that they has to pay to God and will not consider and count it as free gift of grace that He provides out of His benevolence towards His children's benefit (Rom 4:4; Matt 15:26). The greatest despisers of peoples need, with the critical attitude are none other than the law keepers. They show no mercy to others, because they make themselves as righteous before God, and therefore think that they themselves need no mercy of God in their personal lives. The blindness of these Pharisaical people are too deep, that until they repent and become humble, there is no way for them to receive the grace and mercy of God. So in short, if we learn to love others especially the ones whom God brings before us when they are in need, we can easily live a life pleasing to God. This is the royal law that fulfills all law through the one law of love that shows mercy to others and receives grace from God to overcome sin and live to bring glory to God. Hallelujah!

Apostle John who was an apostle of love who was very close to Jesus when He was on earth doing His ministry, he too spoke about only one thing, it is about loving God and one another, loving our neighbors, etc...

Here are some verses from his epistle, "3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him...7 Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining...10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him." (1 John 2:3-4, 7-8, 10).

"For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.... And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment." (1 John 3:11, 23).

"7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time. "1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. John the apostle was one of the three apostles who very close to Jesus in his relationship during His ministry time during which He was training apostles under Him to continue in the ministry after Him, John was close because he was the youngest of all the apostles who saw himself to have had a close relationship with Jesus who had him in the innermost circle of close friends (John 13:23). He was the youngest and have seen the ministry of Jesus very closely and also the ministry of all the apostles very closely as he was one among them, he was the one who saw the Church blossom out of nothing from Jerusalem and have seen how through the power of the Holy Spirit it spread in all the world in the midst of opposition from the Roman empire and the Satanic world that stood against it. He was the one who died a natural death among all the apostles before him who were all martyred in various places of the world for their testimony of Jesus. To say in short, he has seen it all, lived in the midst of it all and have been a part of all the apostolic movement of the first century starting from the ministry of our Lord Jesus to the end of it in the first century. But such a great apostle in his last letter had said to the Church after seeing and knowing all about apostolic movement, only one thing, it was all about loving God and one another, which co-relates to what Jesus had said previously, "34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” and "15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments." (John 14:15). So we know that to love God and love one another is the core of the New Testament teaching of Jesus. But the commandments of Jesus is much more than this because love is only a commandment which incorporates a part of all other commandments within it, but still it does not fully contain all the commandments, because all those commandments are nearly 684 passages which starts with the message of John the Baptist's Baptism of repentance, and majors on the commandments given by our Lord Jesus Christ even up to the last apostle who wrote the last Book of Revelation who was none other than Apostle John from the Island of Patmos where he was kept as prisoner in exile and was later freed and traveled back to the established Church of Ephesus to then live to an old age, dying at Ephesus sometime after AD 98 and died a natural death, of natural causes approximately closer to around AD 100.

Thus if we choose to keep the royal law of love towards God and men, we will automatically be able to please God and live in His favor of His grace and mercy, to be a effective servant of God and a blessing to many others around us in our life on earth. At the same time, we should go deep in to knowing the commandments that Jesus and his apostles have given us, not to legalistically keep it to try to please God and end up with our work considered as debt towards God because of walking by law, but rather to know it all in order to move ourselves effectively and position ourselves humbly at the feet of God to receive His grace and walk still more effectively in our love towards God and fellow humans. To know the law and use it properly in a spiritual way, brings conviction of sin and moves us to approach the throne of God boldly to receive His mercy and grace in the time of our need (Rom 7:7; 1 Tim 1:8; Jam 2:8; Heb 4:16). But to keep the law legalistically makes us justify ourselves before God which is very dangerous to our spiritual lives. So with what spirit we are keeping the law is important, by the letter or by the Spirit? For the letter kills our spiritual life, but the Spirit gives more and more abundant heavenly life for us to experience heaven on earth.

If we have the light of Jesus within us, the life of Jesus works within us. If the life of Jesus works within us, the love of Jesus oozes out of lives towards God and fellow humans to make us glorify God automatically. Even during the Old Testament times, people who kept the law were only justified by faith and not by the works because no one can be justified before God by works (Rom 3:20). So then also it mattered to God with what spirit they kept the law, now also it matters with what spirit we keep the law. If we keep the law by the Spirit, we will be justified by faith, as our works does not justify us but only brings reward from God. We can be freely be justified and be called by God as righteous only by His grace through our faith, which we receive from God as a gift from Him to us (Rom 3:24; Eph 2:8-9). Praise the Lord!

But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved."

Mark 13:28-29 — "28 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near—at the doors!"
