Is Being Indebted To God A Negative Thing?
Question : I heard a sermon on how we are not indebted to God for what He did for us on the cross. The cross was a free gift. We can never repay that debt, but He didn't die for us so we would be indebted to Him. He didn't die because we couldn't pay our debt, He died for us because we didn't even want to pay it! We don't live for God to pay Him back for what He's done, but because we know what incredible things He has in store for those who are faithful. This is why people give gifts anonymously, so no one feels indebted to us for our free gift!
I guess my fear is that people view being indebted to God as a negative thing. When speaking to friends who don't believe I try to avoid that explanation because they don't understand that it is not out of bondage, but gratitude that we serve God. The crucifixion can be misunderstood as something God holds over our heads, but I suppose that would come from the point of view if someone who doesn't understand God's great love for them and their worth to Him.
Answer : You are right in some of the points, but in being indebted to the Lord, the word of God says, "For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." (1 Cor 6:20). In other words, this verse is saying, as we were bought with a great price of the blood of Jesus, we are indebted to glorify God in our body and spirit.
Knowing that we cannot be able to pay back our debt which have been the wages of all our sins even if we work our whole life and sacrificially be spent for God, should make us realize that God has unconditionally forgiven us out of His Love for us (Prov 10:12; Eph 4:32; Col 3:13). Hence Love should make us serve for God and do His will for our lives. When we Love God with all our heart, then knowing our unworthiness in the midst of it will only make us to be grateful and thankful towards God (1 John 4:19-21). Being indebted to God makes our life easy because if we choose to live as God's bond servants (Gal 1:10), God will take care of all our needs supernaturally (Php 4:19). You are right that someone who does not understand His great love as a unbeliever will see crucifixion as something that God holds over their head. It is nice point you have brought out.
