When Did Jesus See Satan "Fall Like Lightning"?
Answer: Greetings in Jesus wonderful name! There are possible three answers that can be assumed from the topic of Satan falling like lightning. In the past it could have happened and can be categorized in group one. During the present time when Jesus was alive and well on the earth doing ministry, he could have seen Satan fall like lightning down to the earth which can be categorized as group two. Or else Jesus could have looked in to the future and could have seen Satan fall like lightning just before the great Tribulation could begin on the planet earth and this can be categorized as group three.
Because Jesus was God before He became a man (John 8:58), Jesus in the beginning could have seen Satan fall like lightning when God threw him down after he became proud and wanted to be like God (Isa 14:12-17; Ezek 28:2-8, 13-17, 18-19), at that time he took one third of angels with him and created chaos in the planet earth which was supposed to be created and inhabited by humans by that time (Gen 1:2; Rev 12:4). This is the first group that believes that it had happened in the past.
If we look in to the verse which says that Jesus has seen Satan "Fall Like Lightning", it is in Luke 10:17-20 which was spoken in context of Jesus sending out at once seventy disciples to work miracles, and to preach, when they return back Jesus started a feedback conversation of how well their ministry went which continues like this, "17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”"
The second group look at this verse as something that happened at the time when Jesus gave His delegated authority to the disciples, and when Satan and his minions came against the disciples, just like they were defeated by Jesus' power again and again, the same power acted through these disciples and Satan was seen by Jesus "Fall Like Lightning" again and again. This is what I believe to be the true meaning of what Jesus has expressed. In the Old Testament, we cannot see even one time Satan or his demons being cast out with the authority of God's kingdom, because He and his tyrants were at loose to rule the world with iron grip of evil deception. Once the wilderness experience started for Jesus, for the first time on planet earth a sinless man in the pre-fallen state of Adam was set forth by God before Satan and his demons to be tested again after four thousand years of fallen men against whom Satan was the undisputed champion in his war against mankind in which they have been made to sin and thus was taken captive by Satan and his demons to keep them in their own authority.
When Jesus was tempted in all the ways for forty days and still he remained without sin, Satan became furious and appeared this time as a person before Jesus to test Him face to face. But in all the three temptation, Jesus overcome Satan and remained sinless before Satan and his demons. Thus for the first time, the authority of spiritual realm that Satan and his demons maintained over humans was suddenly taken back by Jesus which God gifted to Him by the power of the Holy Spirit (Matt 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-14). As the authority of Satan was taken back by the last Adam Jesus Christ through whom a new creation of a new world of God's kingdom suddenly was formed in the spiritual realm (1 Cor 15:45; 2 Cor 5:17), Satan's authority of receiving from heaven power on behalf of people with out any restraint from God was suddenly disputed and bound through Jesus (Matt 12:28, 29-30). From that time onward, once the power of the Kingdom of heaven came directly through Jesus to the earth, Satan was looking for a opportune time to make Jesus sin, and thus take back the mighty authority he had lost in the spiritual realm, but by the grace of God, Satan and his demons were never able to succeed in their evil plan against Jesus.
So personally I am in the second group that believes that Jesus did see Satan "fall like lightning" again and again after he delegated his very own authority over Satan and his demons to the disciples, in which they were astonished to see Satan and his demons subject to them when they started to cast them all out of people whom they met. Each time Satan went to heaven to take the power over these people who were sent by Jesus, the angels on duty at heaven's door rejected Satan's entry in to heaven as he had no permission this time to access the power of God, and when he persisted to take on the power of God on behalf of people, he was thrown down by these guarding angels from heaven of which he was not able to resist and therefore fell down like lightning from heaven to earth being powerless over the disciples of Jesus or over Jesus. Thus the strong man Satan was bound by Jesus, and the house of the body of people from which Satan was operating, of which the demonic guards were occupying was plundered by the disciples of Jesus who made way for the Holy Spirit and the angels of God to guard over them and make them a part of the Kingdom of God (2 Cor 6:16-18; 1 Cor 6:19-20; Heb 1:14).
So the third category can be the time in the future in which Satan might fall like lightning from heaven once and for all time before the Great Tribulation could start. This we can see in the following verses, "7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. 12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”" (Rev 12:7-12). Did Jesus see this fall 2000 years before it had happened? Of course Jesus knew this will happen soon in the time to come, but at that time Jesus was in context speaking to the disciples about how he had seen Satan and his demonic power being made void and useless by the kingdom power that God the Father unleashed through them, and that is why they were able to see demons being subject to them as they were children of God with their names being written in heaven (Luke 10:17-20, 24).
When Jesus died on the Cross, 'the undisputed ruler of this world' title that Satan kept from the time in the beginning when He deceived Adam to sin, was lost and Jesus was crowned by God the Father with all authority as the ruler of the earth and all the universe after he rose from the grave (John 12:31; Matt 28:18; Col 2:14, 15). So after the death and resurrection of Jesus, he was crowned as 'King of kings and Lord of Lords' by God the Father who gave Him a separate Kingdom with all his authority to sit at the right hand of Him to be a ruler over the world and all the universe as a man (Php 2:9-11; Col 1:13; 1 Tim 2:3, 4-5, 6). Praise the Lord! For those who believe in the first and third category are also right, but they have not interpreted the Scripture about Satan "Fall Like Lightning" accurately according to the context.
Much Blessings....
