What Animals Can we eat according to the Bible?

According to Leviticus, clean meat is defined as the meat of every animal that has the hoof cloven in two and chews the cud. Examples of clean meat include the ox (cattle), buffalo, sheep, goat, deer, gazelle, antelope and mountain sheep, just to name a few.

Which animals should not be eaten according to Bible?

Man should not eat "the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you." This means that the animals that can be eaten would need to have hooves in which each has two parts, cleft down the middle, and which also chew their cud, such as cows, goats, and sheep.

Swine are excellent incubators of toxic parasites and viruses, and often carry a variety of disease-causing organisms while appearing to be healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), numerous viruses and other infectious agents are brought into the United States each year in pigs (mostly from China). Of course, you’re probably familiar with H1N1, better known as the “swine flu”—a virus that has made the leap from pig to human. Pork should be considered a homo-toxin (human poison) and the probable cause of many common sicknesses and degenerative diseases.

Rabbits eat their own excrement, consequently, the toxicity levels of rabbits are significantly higher than in other herbivores. Bile salts, fatty acids, gases, and ammonia levels are all at unacceptable levels for human consumption. Many other rodents have similar digestive issues.

Shellfish — eat at your own risk, unclean aquatic creatures are either scavengers or predatory carnivores (such as most sharks). Most clean, edible marine life—those with both fins and scales—are found in deep or fast-running waters and primarily consume algae. However, many varieties (such as the common bass) eat smaller fish, frogs, insects, etc.—but clean fish do not eat dead matter. They also have an efficient enzymatic system of detoxification.

All aquatic scavengers—shellfish, shrimp, catfish, crabs, lobster, squid—are toxic, and their consumption violates God’s instructions designed to protect human health. Why gamble with your health by eating what God has declared to be unclean? Has not God given mankind an abundance of clean fish to eat?

Having spent hundreds of years as captives of the Egyptians, the children of Israel were familiar with certain diseases common to the land. As God revealed in His instructions to Moses, many of these diseases were completely avoidable through the practice of proper hygiene and sanitation (Deut. 23:12-13) and the practice of quarantining those who are ill (Num. 5:2-3). God also gave laws concerning the avoidance of unclean meats that, when followed, would help insure good heath (Lev. 11; Deut 14).

As a loving Father, it is not God’s desire to deny mankind anything that is good, profitable, or that would bring godly joy and happiness. Indeed, it is God’s heartfelt desire for all to be in health and prosper (III John 2), and to live abundantly (John 10:10). Because of His tremendous love for us, God has forbidden that certain animal meats be consumed by His people—as they represent very significant health risks!


So, what did Jesus eat?

As an observant Jew, Jesus would have followed the dietary laws laid down in the 11th chapter of the book of Leviticus, which would have included all the foods made of grains, all fruits and vegetables, and clean animals which must have included cattle, sheep, goats, some fowl, and fish. Jews could eat grasshoppers or locusts, as John the Baptist did, but no other insects. Jesus fed 5,000 people, he multiplied five barley loaves and two small fish. Bread was made of available grains like wheat, barley and millet, etc...Fresh fish would have been plentiful around the Mediterranean coast, Sea of Galilee and Jordan River, so fish must have been his favorite food and the same must have been for most of the Jews in Israel that He used it in his teaching and even miraculous multiplication of it to take the message of God to the people. Much of the diet in ancient Palestine consisted of fruit and vegetables also. In Matthew 21:18-19, we see Jesus approach a fig tree for a quick snack. Jesus ate after his resurrection some broiled fish and some honeycomb (Luke 24:42).

Thus we see that in the New Testament, we take the view, that God has created all things for us to enjoy (1 Tim 6:17). Does it really make sense that God would forbid man to eat pork, catfish, shellfish, rabbit, rat, snake, bat, crocodile, dog, cat, pangolin and numerous other meats for any reason except to protect us from damaging or ruining our health? One of the key purposes of the Bible is to reveal things to mankind that we could not otherwise discover on our own (1 Cor 10:11). Thus Christ who has come to fulfill the law (Matt 5:17-18), has always for the past 2000 years have been “magnifying the Law and has made it glorious” and he will continue to do it along with the Church for the next Millennium in which Jesus together with the Church will rule the whole earth (Isa. 42:21). Thus teaching us to keep it and therefore teach others of its blessing for the Glory of God, not just as a letter of the law religiously but as a fruit of his grace that will fulfill the righteousness by faith through a intimate relationship with God through His Spirit (Matt 5:19).

Paul the leading apostle who wrote one third of the New Testament said to Church as a whole and also specifically to the end time believers prophetically saying,"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer." (1 Timothy 4:1-5).

Is Paul upending centuries of Jewish adherence to Old Testament food laws? Is Paul contradicting his own later claim that he had committed “nothing against the people or the customs of [the] fathers” (Acts 28:17)—which would have included the laws of clean and unclean meats? I believe that Paul was speaking within the boundary of the created "to be received", within the category of clean meats which were created to be received as food with thanksgiving. God also created animals that were never designed to be eaten by humans—thus they are termed unclean. Thus Paul in 1 Tim 4:1-5 was actually condemning an ascetic demonic doctrine that prohibited even the consumption of clean meats and he did not encourage everyone to eat unclean meats against the perfect will of God revealed in the law.

For example even during the days of Noah in which humans were let loose to become Non-vegetarians, still God instructed him to sacrifice and eat only the clean animals and birds (Gen 8:20-22). But later opened up the flood gates of choosing "every moving things that lives" to be food for the people of the world just like the green herbs (Gen 9:3). Can all the green herbs can be eaten? We see that some prophets from the school of prophets that Elisha had, got the ingredients for the pottage, wild herbs, from the field. “Field” is the Hebrew 'sadeh' which refers to an open, uncultivated area of land where you can only find that which grows wild. The unnamed gatherer of the herbs went out and found what he thought would make a good stew. These herbs were soft, succulent plants without a lot of woody tissue; they were palatable, and often used for medicinal purposes or for their sweet flavor and aromatic scent. But what he found out in the field (a picture of the world) were poisonous herbs. Untrained in these matters, he mistook the wild vine for an edible cucumber or squash. What he found is believed to be the citrallus colocynthus, which had a leaf like a squash but was bitter and poisonous due to its very severe purgative qualities. If eaten in large amounts it would tear up the digestive tract and could even cause death. In small amounts you might not die, but you might think you were going to--and might even want to.

What’s the picture? The world has both poisonous, wild and unclean herbs as well as meats, though it may look harmless and even resemble the good clean food, but they are bitter to our health and bring unhappiness to man. So we should always separate the edible, healthy and nutritious from the unclean that we should not eat, so to eat wisely for us is to live abundantly and healthy for a long time to glorify God through our lives (1 Kings 4:38, 39-41).


Did Jesus Declare All Meats as Clean?

Jesus was simply pointing out that the Pharisees’ ritual washings were ineffective and unnecessary in preventing spiritual defilement; rather, true spiritual purity is a matter of the heart and mind. Again, this passage does not deal at all with the subject of clean meats to eat and unclean meats to avoid! (Mark 7:1-5).


What about Peter's vision in which God instructed him to eat the unclean animals, was it a literal or a spiritual message?

God was showing Peter and the Church that Gentiles were being offered salvation—that they could become spiritually circumcised. Thus, the subject matter of Acts 10 has nothing to do with clean and unclean meats. God simply used the vision of unclean animals to emphasize a point to Peter—that when God has spiritually cleansed a Gentile, he is not to be deemed common or unclean. Ultimately out of this all Peter the apostle understood that God is no respecter of person, people of all nations are acceptable to Him as long as they fear God and works righteousness (Acts 10:14-15, 28, 34-35).

"The Lord says, "The end is near for those who purify themselves for pagan worship, who go in procession to sacred gardens, and who eat pork and mice and other disgusting foods."" (Isaiah 66:17, GNT).

In the above verse if we take it in proper context and not read in to the Scripture the fad idea of our end times, we know that Corona virus has nothing to do with it, because in the above verse even though we know that these pagan worshipers of idols who were involved in perverse sexual practice for their deity after their great procession, which then ends the festival of celebration with pork and mice eating binge, God warns them that their end is very near which may be the judgment of the Lord. It is true that the unclean animals which are eaten may carry certain very bad virus like H1N1 Flu Virus (Swine Flu), and even sometimes even clean birds might catch with virus like H5N1 bird flu (Chicken virus), etc...to be killed in lot to prevent the spread of such virus from further affecting other stocks. But the reason for the Corona virus spreading in China is due to a leakage and seepage of the virus out of the most advanced epidemic disease research and weapon development laboratories managed by the Chinese government is the known cause of its outbreak. Chinese have not kept the safety standard like the US as they were developing some of the most secret and devastating bio-weapons within it, thus when the virus seeped in to downtown and spread among the people rapidly, they were not able to contain it as they expected initially. Thus when it spread and became a pandemic, the instant scape-goat which the Chinese government projected to the world was snakes, rats, bats, pangolins, etc... from which it is believed to have started in a market in the city of Wuhan, in central Hubei province that also sold live wild animals. To take these poor wild creatures as the cause of the outbreak is such a laughable idea that nobody will be ready to take especially when we all know that these animals have been eaten by the Chinese for a long long time because of some religious belief and superstitions that have made its meat considered a delicacy. In other south eastern Asia countries too that have related belief of Buddhism, spiritism and the like culture similar to it, have similar related culture where they eat wild reptiles, whales, tortoises, crocodiles, pork, cockroaches, insects, rats, etc....just like China as delicacies to enjoy. But they have carried on without much trouble in their lives because they are always immunized enough due to consuming it from childhood days.

Even though health experts think it may have originated in bats, pangolins, etc... and then passed to humans, possibly via another species, yet as we have discussed earlier, the possibility is very less as the eating habits of such wild creatures among Chinese have already been imbibed in the culture itself.

I want you to tell the exact Biblical truth or the reason that heaven gives for the spread of Corona virus in our days. The Lord God through the Bible clearly says, " 19 “Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out My fury on it in blood, and cut off from it man and beast, 20 even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live,” says the Lord GOD, “they would deliver neither son nor daughter; they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.” 21 For thus says the Lord GOD: “How much more it shall be when I send My four severe judgments on Jerusalem—the sword and famine and wild beasts and pestilence—to cut off man and beast from it?" (Ezekiel 14:19-21). In other words "pestilence—to cut off man and beast from" the face of the earth is one of the "four severe judgments on" the land. It is God's fury for Corona virus to mix in the blood of not only humans but also the beasts on the land because of the sins of humans. In other words, even the animals and birds suffer and groan for freedom through the sons and children of God looking for liberty from the fury of God caused by human sins (Rom 8:19-20, 21-22). Why blame wild and domesticated animals for the virus spreading pestilences, when sin is the ultimate reason for the widespread death and repentance the prevention from it (Luke 13:1-9). Jesus predicted the same "pestilences and famines" during the "beginning of sorrows" just before the end starts with the "abomination of desolation" from which the time of Tribulation will start to come upon the world any moment of time (Matt 24:7, 8, 14-15). This "abomination of desolation" is nothing but Antichrist who has made previously a peace covenant on behalf of nations of the world with Israel for 7 years time, which is known as Daniel 70th week will suddenly stop the temple sacrifice to break the covenant at the middle of the three and half years time, and he will declare himself to be the God of this world (Dan 9:27; Matt 24:15; 2 Thess 2:2, 3, 4). From this moment on wards, a time of great Tribulation may break forth any time in all the world according to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.


So to your above question, have the Chinese been affected by nCoV because of eating unclean animals against the will of God revealed in the Bible?

According to me, my answer is, a yes and a no, 'a yes' I have pronounced because as we have already seen, eating unclean animals are not healthy for humans or else the Lord would not have prohibited it through the dietary law for His people of the nation of Israel. My answer is 'a no' because, as we have also seen how a nation like China and south eastern Asia nations near it are used to eating wild animals, insects and birds for the centuries past, so they have become immunized to its ill effect mostly.

So whether as we have already seen, even if it is the bio-laboratory seepage and leakage of Chinese interest and deep desire to rule the world, they have errored in safety precaution to contain it, yet it cannot happen without the knowledge of the Lord, so we know even such acts come under the pestilence that God sends as judgment against nations which do not align to the will of God revealed in the Bible in these times of beginning of sorrows before the very end time start, and end with the day of Christ coming to this earth to rule it for a thousand years time along with the Church from the New Earth and New Heaven. In other words, humans in their quest for power and dominance, might have started it, but they themselves find no way to contain it from spreading contagiously through materials in the land, air and water, which is a deadly combination for the destruction of humankind in their own nations. Indeed, this Corona virus is a sure judgment from the Lord over the nations, who are not ready to repent of its sins but instead are in quest for power and dominance in these end times. Whoever digs a pit will fall into it; if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on them (Prov 26:27). In other words, no one can cover it before the Lord who rules the heaven and earth, for He is never distracted because of too much information and false propaganda to turn the mind away from what is happening in reality in their own nations.         

Let us all "watch and pray" as Jesus has advised the Church to be during these times of intense deception from the world and persecution and hate against the Church which we are all experiencing in the world now before the falling away comes in the Church first (Matt 24:3-5, 11-13; 2 Thess 2:3; 1 Pet 4:17-18, 19), so that we may be truly saved and endure with faith to the end to be ready for the Rapture of the Church which the Lord has promised to be a escape route out of the Great Tribulation that is coming upon the whole wide world for it to experience unprecedented suffering and death for sin and evil works like never before or ever after in this earth since the beginning of time (Luke 21:36; Rev 3:10). You can almost hear the footsteps of Jesus coming to open the doors of heaven to rapture the Church!!! You can almost hear the Trumpet sound...! Get Ready!
