Can Our Names Be Blotted Out of the Book of Life?
A : Read these two words together in context, "4 You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels." (Rev 3:4-5). Here Jesus was not threatening to take the names of believers out of the Book of Life if they do not overcome, but rather he is encouraging the believing born-again over-comers that He will not take their names out of the Book of life but will continue to confess their name before God the Father and His angels as His very own sheep (John 9:28; 1 John 2:1-2; 1 Tim 2:5-6; Heb 8:1). Many of these few true believers who were worthy and clothed in white garments of righteous works were living based on fear rather than love (1 John 4:18; Rev 3:4; 19:8, 14). Only a few names who have not defiled their garments were really saved in this Church of Sardis and therefore they needed to be watched and strengthened by the shepard of the Church who need to help them live by love towards God (Rev 3:2).
All others were name sake Christians who received the gospel, but were not born again really to keep their garments clean and to stay washed in the blood of Jesus (Rev 3:3). The main problem in the Church of Sardis was that, all of them claimed to be born again and had a name that were Christians outwardly. But only few were really born again and all the rest needed to receive the true salvation of the Lord and be raised from the dead spirit which remained in them as the same before they joined the Church of Sardis (John 3:3, 5-6; John 5:24; 1 John 3:14; Rev 3:1). The overcomers according to the Lord are those who are born again and have the true faith of Jesus within them, they are those who automatically overcome the world because of the faith that God has put within them (1 John 5:4). Most people take this verse our of context and pull it out to show that a believer can lose His salvation. But actually it says just the opposite. Blessings.....
