Does God Hate Rock Music?
Answer : God does not hate rock music because it is He who has given the talent for the musicians to play like that. The devil doesn't own any music until people start giving it to him by their perverse thinking. Why should the devil have all the good music when God owns it all and wants us to glorify Him through it all. When people play rock music with the right motive that is to glorify God, God will love to hear it. If God hates rock music, why should He say through the man after His own heart to "Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy." (Psa 33:3), this for sure looks more like rock to me. He has told the saints to shout for joy (Psa 132:9, 16). Then God says, "With trumpets and the sound of a horn; Shout joyfully before the LORD, the King." (Psa 98:6) and we are commanded to shout joyfully to Him with Psalms (Psa 95:2). When God blesses us we are supposed to shout and then sing to glorify God (Psa 65:13). We are also commanded to praise God with "loud cymbals" which is the main ingredient of rock music (Psa 150:5). To me it is clear that rock music should be used in a godly way to glorify God. The Psalmist says to "Sing aloud to God our strength; Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob." (Psa 81:1), when we sing aloud by God's strength, sure there is going to be a thunderous sound like when it happened on the day of Pentecost so that all those who are around will come looking to find what kind of sound is that and will be touched supernaturally by God's heavenly anointed ministry (Acts 2:2-6). So let us be rather be filled with the Spirit and supernaturally shout to glorify God with our loud singing and our joyful shout. David also reveals that he would shouts his praise to God in the morning time towards God because of His grateful heart of thanksgiving toward God for all the protection that God provided Him all the time until then (Psa 59:16). It definitely brought David close to the heart of God all the time and made Him fulfill the will and purpose of God for His generation fully (Acts 13:22, 36). I think it is good for us to follow Him in this regard.
I believe music in itself is neither spiritual nor secular, but it is the script and the motivation behind the music that makes it either godly or ungodly in its nature. It either glorifies God when it is purely done for His glory or glorifies self when it is done to exalt oneself. Rock band like "Petra" has been a great blessing to many including myself since my childhood days. I do not recommend people to hear any music whether rock, pop, jazz or rap, when it does not glorify God. Just because it is not a sin for anybody to hear godly rock music which glorifies God, no body should get controlled by it and get addicted to it than to God to whom we must get addicted. Apostle Paul has clearly given a good piece of advice for this young generation that is coming up saying, "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." (1 Cor 6:12). In other words, Paul is saying, even though it is not wrong to hear and enjoy godly rock music, do not be addicted to it or anything like it except to the Lord who uses various means and gives different gifts and tastes in music to glorify Himself. Just because some of the so-called Christian rockers are not living a life which exhibits the character of humility and self sacrifice of God doesn't mean that God hates rock music. We are suppoused to see the Lord Jesus who is our only example to follow in our faith life (Heb 12:2). May God help our young generation to understand this thing and glorify God with loud rock music too. GLORY TO GOD! Blessings....
