Can Science And Religion Go Together?

Can A Believer Be A Scientist?

Question : Can A Believer Be A Scientist?

Answer : We know that many scientists believed not only in God but a personally knowable God whose presence sustained them in their pursuit to great discoveries, which changed the way man understood the intricate details of how God has created the heaven and the earth and all things in it.

Science and religion cannot be seperated as people foolishly think, because once you take God out of the picture of creation, you will only have a guess work of people's idea without any basis of evidence or truth in it.

Sir James Young Simpson, a obstetrician and pioneer in the field of anaesthetics who discovered the anesthetic properties of chloroform and one of the most learned scientists of his time, when asked what he considered as the most wonderful discovery he had ever made, he said with out any hesitation, "The greatest discovery I ever made was that I had a Saviour." He then went on to find out the wonders of God's creation.

This is true of all the christian scientists who believed in a personal God who saved them from sin. These are men and women who saw no contradiction between what God has said in His word and what science revealed as they researched to prove what God had said has always been true. True science will always back up what God has said to be true because God cannot lie
(Titus 1:2).

History shows that many scientists in England from Newton onwards were majoring their research to discover what God has done. Bible Teacher Peter S. C. Pothan says in one of his articles titled 'The Importance of Believing in Creation', "...John Kepler, who set out the Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion following Copernicus' idea that the planets (including the earth) revolved around the sun, said just before he died that he believed "only and alone in the service of Jesus Christ. In Him is all refuge, all solace.""

French inventor, Blaise Pascal was one of the most reputed mathematician and physicist of his time. He is credited with inventing an early calculator, amazingly advanced for its time, called the Pascaline. Blaise Pascal who lived between 1623-1662 said, “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.”

Isaac Newton the English Mathematician and Physicist who lived between 1642-1727 is widely called the "father of the modern science", enunciated his law of universal gravitation and three laws of motion and thus laid the groundwork for classical mechanics, also known as Newtonian mechanics, which strongly laid a strong base in the physical sciences until the advent of quantum mechanics around the beginning of the twentieth century which was a futher development. Sir Newton said, “This most beautiful system
[The Universe] could only proceed from the dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.”

Albert Einstein who lived between 14 March 1879 to 18 April 1955, was a German theoretical physicist who developed the theory of general relativity, effecting a revolution in physics. For this achievement, Einstein is often regarded as the "father of modern physics". Einstein is generally considered the most influential physicist of the 20th century. While best known for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation"), he received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". The latter was pivotal in establishing quantum theory within physics. Such a great scientist said openly about his Judeo-Christian upbringing and his belief to the "Saturday Evening Post, on Oct 26, 1929," saying, "As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazerene. No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life."

Can a person who believes in science can also believe that God exists and can be known personally through Jesus? What more evidence we need than the most eminent men of science who were living examples before us. They were more learned and wise because they believed in a Creator whose purpose for creating everthing was to share fellowship with Himself and share His love towards others. They enjoyed their science and discoveries because they believed that God has the ability to create "out of nothing (ex nihilo being Latin for "from nothing.")"
(Heb 11:3) and that humans are created in the image of God to share His love with them (Gen 1:26).

The Bible is clear that God is the creator of this world
(Gen 1:1; Job 38:1-42:6). Looking at such passages as Genesis 1:1ff, Psalms 33:6, Psalms 148:5, John 1:3, Colossians 1:16, and Hebrews 11:3, we get a complete picture of how God created the world out of nothing, though the Bible does not state it explicitly. Those who believe this truth of God's word stake their life on the infalliable authority of God's words and indirectly say, "Indeed, let God be found true and every man a liar." (Rom 3:4). Man always says, shows me I will believe you, God responds always saying, Believe Me and then by a supernatural evidence of tangible faith within your innermost being of your heart, I will make you understand how I created all the world (Heb 11:1-2). The question all humans should ask themselves is, Am I ready to believe what God says? If yes, we could start on a wonderful journey of a lifetime in discovering the wonders of God's creation and the science of knowing it in details.

Michael Faraday, who live between 22 September 1791 to 25 August 1867, was a British scientist, chemist, physicist and philosopher who greatly contributed to the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His main discoveries include that of the magnetic field, electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis. Michael Faraday's biggest breakthrough in electricity was his invention of the electric motor. Michael Faraday who was a Book binder before he became one of the greatest inventors and scientists the world has seen. Here is what he said: ".... the Christian who is taught of God ... finds his guide in the Word of God ... and looks for no assurance beyond what the Word can give Him... The Christian religion is a revelation, and that revelation is the Word of God ... No revival and no temporal teaching comes between it and him. He who is taught of the Holy Spirit needs no crowd and no revival to teach him; if he stand alone he is fully taught..."

In the Old Testament Book of Psalms, David the man after God's own heart who was astonished by the awesomeness of God's creation said,
" 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? 5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor." In other words, the Psalmist David was saying, we are so small compared to all other creations of God, but yet God in His love towards us humans have crowned us with glory and honor of having a relationship with Himself and have given us enough knowledge to rule over all His creations just like He rules over the entire universe. What a honor it is to be created in the image of God and to live in constant realtionship with Him!

Many who think that if we pursue spirituality, we become dull to understand or have a logical mind to know science, are actually deceived. It is this lie of the devil that has made many parents around the world to lose their children to the godless belief's of evolution and agnosticism. In fact as we have seen above in the life of great eminent men of all times, most of them were theologians who desired to glorify God through discovering His creation by science. May God help us all to understand the creation of God through faith and look for ways to explain it logically through science and not vice-versa. BE BLESSED AND BE A BLESSING!

Much Blessings....
