As The Old Testament Tithe Went To The Temple, Should Our New Testament Tithe Or Offering Go To The Church?

Can God Be Robbed Really, As He Owns Everything?

Question : Some people believe that we can rob God when we do not give tithe to Him according to Malachi 3:8, but according to me how can we rob God when He owns everything? You need to read the context of the Malachi reference. What was the purpose of the tithe collected? I do indeed believe in giving with a cheerful heart. I also believe that tithing is an O.T. requirement to support the Levitical priesthood and the Temple. Also to feed orphans and take care of widows. Today we are the Temple of The Lord. He lives in us. Praise God. So give generously with a cheerful heart.

Answer : We can rob God when what we should lawfully give to God is taken and consumed for our own desires. In the New Testament, we are not under the law but under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
(Rom 6:14), so we are not under any compulsion to give except for the love of our Lord Jesus Christ which motivates us to not only give our money sacrificially but our very life which we owe to Him (2 Cor 5:14).

We are individually the temple of God
(2 Cor 6:16), but what about the corporate Church which is the pillar of truth that stands to disperse the truth, which is the bigger temple and the one which is the collective Body of Christ (1 Tim 5:15; 1 Cor 12:12, 27), if God has called us to a particular Church in which we are a part to exercise our gift and become blessed, then it is our duty to support the ministry and also other para-ministries which are dispersing the truth all over the world. When we do not co-operate with the desire of God to save all the people in the world through preaching the gospel which has saved us (1 Tim 2:3-4), actually we are robbing God by using our money and life for our own purpose apart from God's purpose being fulfilled in our lives. Paul the apostle has clearly told those who are blessed by the hearing of the word to financially support the teachers of the word who are doing the work of God faithfully (Gal 6:6). So in the New Testament times, it is up to us to recognize these things and act according to the grace God gives to support the Church in propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ in to all the world (1 Cor 7:7; 1 Peter 4:10-11; Rom 12:6-8).

The only thing that we are told by the writer to the Hebrews is to check the conduct of those who rule over us spiritually and speak the word of God to us, and then if it is good, then support them by remembering their need as their actions reveal the faith which they speak about
(Heb 13:7). So we ought to consider the corporate body of Christ as the New Testament temple equivalent of the Old Testament temple where priests ministered to God on behalf of the people, and then support the teachers of the word in whatever way we can for the extension of the kingdom of God through the propagation of the gospel of the kingdom in to all the world (Matt 24:14; 1 Peter 2:5, 9-10; Rom 10:14-18).

Much Blessings...
