God has answered this question in the Old Testament time itself when people were wrongly propagating a wrong concept of unbelief against the Word and will of God saying, " 18 “ As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother by violence, and did what is not good among his people, behold, he shall die for his iniquity. 19 “Yet you say, ‘Why should the son not bear the guilt of the father?’ Because the son has done what is lawful and right, and has kept all My statutes and observed them, he shall surely live. 20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. 21 “But if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 22 None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; because of the righteousness which he has done, he shall live. 23 Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord GOD, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live? 24 “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? The way of the Lord is very plain and simple to understand, and easy to live, when a human sins and keeps on sinning against the Lord, he will die for it. But if he turns from his wicked and evil ways to look to the Lord for deliverance and starts to live by keeping the statutes to do what is lawful and right in the sight of God and man, he will not die because the Lord is gracious and compassionate to forgive all the sins of the repentant, to embrace him back in to His favor and protection to keep him away from the way of death (Psa 145:8-9; 103:8). O what a wonderful God we have!
When people say that there is a family curse that has come upon someone, it does not mean that God has sent it upon people, but rather the son or daughter of the house has come to learn of the evil ways of the parents by seeing their lives, and thus they become the same under the curse that has come through their family line. The children start to do evil when they see their parents without any fear of God do evil against the Lord. O what a sad thing it is when the parents destroy their own homes!
We see the in the Family line of the Father of our faith Abraham, how a simple sin of lying was at loose in the family curse that became more and more prominent in the family line.
Abraham said a half lie when he wanted Sarah to say that she was his sister in order to protect himself from ungodly people who would want to take Sarah to marry her because of her beauty (Gen 12:11-14). In fact, Sarah is Abraham’s half-sister (Gen 20:2, 12), but that was only half the truth because she was also his wife (Gen 11:29-30, 31; 12:5). Sarah's life was put to risk by Abraham's half lie, and he was rightly rebuked by Pharaoh for his evil deed (Gen 12:18-20), and also the same half lie was repeated when he did not learn the lesson from the first ordeal itself (Gen 20:1-6, 7), but God faithfully protected Abraham and Sarah from the house of Abimelech a local warlord (Gen 20:8-18). And God sovereignly protected Abraham because of His faithfulness in spite of Abraham's failing to walk in His righteous way (Gen 12:17).
Isaac told a full lie when he told all people around him that his wife Rebekah was his Sister, because of fearing for his own life that people might kill him to take his beautiful wife to marry her, he again put the life of Rebekah at risk for his own selfish purpose, but God in His faithfulness again protected them both in spite of failing Him (Gen 26:7). Isaac was rebuked by a heathen Philistine king named Abimelech for his blatant lie (Gen 26:8-11). That is God's unconditional love for us humans which was shown to Isaac and Rebekah at that time in spite of their failings. In other words, God uses stones to speak his righteousness and teach his children the righteous way.
But then see how the curse of the iniquity in the family line keeps increasing, Father Abraham told half a lie, Son Isaac told a full lie, but then we see Jacob the Grandson became a liar and a deceiver from the day he was born (Gen 25:24, 25, 26). So when we sincerely repent of our family sins that keeps repeated, and come under the blood covering of Jesus Christ who took all our curses on the tree on Himself through faith, then there comes the blessing of Abraham which is the promise of the Spirit, who helps us rewrite our new gene of heaven inside us to change the way our family is blessed by God from heaven, and be under His favor all the days of our lives (Gal 3:13-14).
The man of God Derek Prince expressed the following way of how children are affected when parents do something rashly without consulting the Lord of heaven and earth who rules the world in His will through his servants, "Curses can legitimately proceed from people representing God. Consider Joshua, who pronounced a curse on anybody who would rebuild Jericho after the children of Israel miraculously recaptured the city. At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath: “Cursed before the LORD is the man who undertakes to rebuild this city Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn son will he lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest will he set up its gates.” Joshua 6:26. That curse was pronounced about 1300 B.C. In about 800 B.C. a man rebuilt Jericho and we read about it in 1 Kings 16:34. In Ahab’s time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundation at the cost of his firstborn son Abiram, and he set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, in accordance with the word of the LORD spoken by Joshua son of Nun.
Five hundred years later the curse pronounced by Joshua was worked out in that man who rebuilt the city. It cost him two of his children. Can you imagine the doctors of that day trying to determine the cause of their deaths? No obvious medical reason – no known diagnosis, and yet they died. The doctors didn’t know that the cause went back 500 years to a curse that had been pronounced as a judgment on the city which God determined should never be rebuilt. Can you see that you may be dealing with things in your life of which the cause can go back hundreds of years?"
What do we learn from the above exposition and truth revealed? Parents should be very careful to do things in their lives, which might easily affect their children and bring curses in to their lives. The only way to protect our children is to stay close to the Lord of heaven and earth who rules over all the universe and learn to do His will in His way and time, so that our families can always be covered under the umbrella protection of the blood of Jesus Christ, which only has the power to keep us all away from the effect of curses that are at loose in this world under the influence of Satan who operates through sin, self and selfishness which always leads to destruction.
We see in the life of David, how the consequence of the sin of adultery and murder, came to affect the new born baby of his when God in his justice have executed the wages of his sins in his life, which was the death of his new born (2 Sam 12:6, 10). In other words, the Lord has put away the sin of David when he sincerely confessed of his sins, and therefore he did not die which is the wages of his own sins (Rom 6:23). But to fulfill the Lord's righteous justice, the Lord had to chastise David his servant and as a result of it, the prophet declared that the sword would never depart from the house of David, and that the child born to David will die because of him giving a great occasion for the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme as a result of his sins (2 Sam 12:10, 14). What do we learn from the above life event of David in which he failed to walk in the righteous way of the Lord, and instead sinned against the Lord boldly without having a second thought? When we sin and then ask the Lord's forgiveness for it all, the Lord will forgive all our sins because Jesus carried the curses for all of us sins on the cross so that we can be spiritually free and have liberty to come before the Lord approaching Him as our Father, friend and fellow confidante (Gal 3:13; 2 Cor 5:21), but the same God who loves us, also loves us too much that He does not want us to continue in the sins which separates us from Him, so as a result to correct our mistakes God in His righteousness chastises and corrects us to allow us to face the physical consequences of our sins many times to face it, and therefore we must be careful and fearful not to indulge in those same sins that pulled them down spiritually and caused a bad name to come to the Lord because of it (Heb 12:6).
Also we should understand that only when we consider the severity and goodness of God at the same time, our sight of seeing God is right without blurring lines of sin and injustice which presents a wrong image of the true God (Rom 11:22). On the part of the believers God wants to show only his goodness, therefore even when we are corrected for our sins, it is only for our own good that God does these chastisement so that we can be happy and free from all the bondages and curses of sin. For His children, God turns all the good and the bad to become only good at the end of the journey of our life on earth (Rom 8:28). Severity of God will be shown in executing his justice through the curses being executed for injustice done by people on earth (Isa 24:20-21; Prov 26:2). Even the saved children of God when they do injustice (1 Peter 2:20). God has set up a human institution of government and court system on earth in all the countries of the world to bring justice to those who have been affected by human injustice, and evil done by humans to fellow human beings (Rom 13:1-7; Gen 9:4-6). So governments and courts will be used by God to bring justice to his children of faith, in a positive way when they have done good and suffer evil of injustice from other fellow humans, and will use also in a negative way to the believers when they have not obeyed the spiritual authority of the Church and the elders, and choose to walk in their own fleshly way to do evil and be involved in injustice to others around them or even to the brethren itself. No believers are immune from the earthly authority and justice that God has set up on earth through governments and court institutions, but every believer is immune spiritually from the consequence of sins no matter what, God protects their relationship with Him when they are saved.
So does children have to suffer for the wrong doings of their parents even when the children are saved?
Fathers shall not be put to death or suffer because of the consequence of the sin of their children, nor shall children be put to death or suffer because of their the consequence of the sin of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death and suffer for his own sin (Deut 24:16). This above thing that the Lord says is for the children of God who are under the blood protection of His, because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ the sinless Lamb of God (John 1:29; 1 Peter 1:18-21), who voluntarily sacrificed Himself on behalf of their sins, so that it is forgiven and cleansed in the sight of God (Rom 6:23; Heb 9:14; 1 John 1:7, 9). The same “all” that die in Adam and from the original sin nature that we have all inherited (Psa 51:5), the same “all” can “be made alive” by repentance and faith (1 Cor 15:22).
God pardons the iniquity of his children and never alters their heavenly path of salvation from sin and inheritance in heaven for their earthly lives, but will serve judgment for repeated unbelief and disobedience on their part (Num 14:17-24). But for those who continue as heathen in idolatry and do not love Him and His righteousness and holiness, He is "a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate Him" (Exod 20:5). The sorry story of family curses continues in the lives of unbelievers, until they come to repent of their sins and hold on in faith to the Lord of heaven and earth who has created them all for His own glory.
Generational curses are there (Jer 16:10-13), even from the trait and behavior that we inherit from our parents we can say how much of what they do influence us in our life and behavior. The Bible mentions “generational curses” in several places (Exodus 20:5; 34:7; Numbers 14:18; Deuteronomy 5:9). God warns that He is “a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.” Implied in the warning of Exodus 20:5 is the fact that the children will choose to repeat the sins of their fathers. But in the very next verse He promised that He would show “love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Exodus 20:6). So the cure for a “generational curse” is repentance of the sin in question, faith in Christ, and a life consecrated to the Lord will not only cure us from curses progressively but also will make us immune to it over a period of time (Romans 12:1-2; Exo 15:26; Nah 1:9). The father’s disobedience to God’s commandments have a ripple effect that keep on going until some other father in his lineage breaks that cycle (Gal 6:7).
When a person or a child is saved, he does not have to suffer for the consequence of his/her parents spiritually, but physically they have to bear it and ask the grace of God to come out of it, which will be absolutely possible when he/she is in partnership with God (Matt 19:26; Luke 1:37). For example, when a debt has been incurred by a father who has taken it in his name dies suddenly, the children have to bear it as they are the legal heirs of his property. So in the physical realm the consequence are always there, just as the good side of how they inherit their property and money he has treasured comes to them without their effort, so also the negative consequences also do follow them. But thank God for Jesus Christ, who lifts the down trodden, poor and crushed in spirit people, because He understands them more than any other human being as He has empathy towards them as He has faced the same in his own life too and overcame such gloomy thing in his own life (Heb 4:15; 2:18). Jesus lost his own Carpenter father who was the only breadwinner for the whole big family of his in his early teens, being the first son of his family, he took to his family business Carpentry by inheritance to take care of the whole family. He was ridiculed by the public for his mysterious birth and for his perfection. He overcame all these things to finally even taste death for all the same people who hated him and mocked him to forgive their sins and lead them heavenward by the grace of God (Heb 2:9). If Jesus as our Captain of our salvation can overcome all the setbacks of life, we too as his followers can overcome the physical setbacks we have inherited from our family and also excel in all areas of our lives by the favor and grace of God that makes us successful in this life and in the life to come (Heb 2:10; Luke 2:52; 1 Peter 2:21). In other words, God turns the inherited parental sins as a opportunity for God to strengthen them with his grace and help them overcome it all in their lives, and thus be glorified through the lives of the sufferer who is victorious (John 9:1-3). Patience of faith in the midst of suffering always lead us to victorious life and living to make us inherit all the promises of God on earth (Heb 10:35-36). Hallelujah! May His Mighty NAME be glorified through our lives for HIS GLORY!

The Bible mentions “generational curses” in several places (Exodus 20:5; 34:7; Numbers 14:18; Deuteronomy 5:9). God warns that He is “a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.” Implied in the warning of Exodus 20:5 is the fact that the children will choose to repeat the sins of their fathers. But in the very next verse He promised that He would show “love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Exodus 20:6). So the cure for a “generational curse” is repentance of the sin in question, faith in Christ, and a life consecrated to the Lord will not only cure us from curses progressively but also will make us immune to it over a period of time (Romans 12:1-2; Exo 15:26; Nah 1:9). The father’s disobedience to God’s commandments have a ripple effect that keep on going until some other father in his lineage breaks that cycle (Gal 6:7).
When a person or a child is saved, he does not have to suffer for the consequence of his/her parents spiritually, but physically they have to bear it and ask the grace of God to come out of it, which will be absolutely possible when he/she is in partnership with God (Matt 19:26; Luke 1:37). For example, when a debt has been incurred by a father who has taken it in his name dies suddenly, the children have to bear it as they are the legal heirs of his property. So in the physical realm the consequence are always there, just as the good side of how they inherit their property and money he has treasured comes to them without their effort, so also the negative consequences also do follow them. But thank God for Jesus Christ, who lifts the down trodden, poor and crushed in spirit people, because He understands them more than any other human being as He has empathy towards them as He has faced the same in his own life too and overcame such gloomy thing in his own life (Heb 4:15; 2:18). Jesus lost his own Carpenter father who was the only breadwinner for the whole big family of his in his early teens, being the first son of his family, he took to his family business Carpentry by inheritance to take care of the whole family. He was ridiculed by the public for his mysterious birth and for his perfection. He overcame all these things to finally even taste death for all the same people who hated him and mocked him to forgive their sins and lead them heavenward by the grace of God (Heb 2:9). If Jesus as our Captain of our salvation can overcome all the setbacks of life, we too as his followers can overcome the physical setbacks we have inherited from our family and also excel in all areas of our lives by the favor and grace of God that makes us successful in this life and in the life to come (Heb 2:10; Luke 2:52; 1 Peter 2:21). In other words, God turns the inherited parental sins as a opportunity for God to strengthen them with his grace and help them overcome it all in their lives, and thus be glorified through the lives of the sufferer who is victorious (John 9:1-3). Patience of faith in the midst of suffering always lead us to victorious life and living to make us inherit all the promises of God on earth (Heb 10:35-36). Hallelujah! May His Mighty NAME be glorified through our lives for HIS GLORY!
