Who Is My Neighbor?

Can We Be Able To Love God And Others Without Becoming A Child Of God?

"Do not forget to entertain strangers." (Heb 13:2).

What separates the natural from supernatural is the thin line of spiritual perception that is honed well day by day through faith in the Word of God that helps us see fully well the activities of God and His angels from heaven intervening in our daily earthly mundane activities? We humans are first and foremost eternal God-conscious spiritual beings with a self conscious soul, wrapped around with a dust suit by God to make us live temporally on earth till we die. The world runs by 'I, me and myself' policy which promotes the survival of the fittest in every area of life and living, God runs the world by 'you, we and ourselves' policy which promotes sharing and caring not only with our own family but even the strangers of the world whom are kept as neighbors around us.

In the parable of the good Samaritan that Jesus told, we know that the Jews hated the gentiles and Samaritans who were not their own caste and creed but rather were the mixed sons of Adam. They saw these Gentiles as dogs spiritually as they were never able to grasp their one God idea that is expressed in the Bible. So a learned expert of the law came to Jesus and want to test Jesus, so he asked Him saying, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered through throwing back a couple of questions to him which is the way Jesus answered most of the time to make people think deeply and express what they have in their heart to be expressed before all, so he said, “What is written in the Law?” So the expert replied saying, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Jesus appreciated his answer and said, “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

This expert knew that law in reality cannot be kept honestly without breaking it, so he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” From this we can see that neither eternal life can be inherited by doing the law, nor the law can be kept without breaking through trying sincerely to keep it by tradition of a religion. So with whatever hate the law expert had towards Samaritans who were never considered good by their birth and belief, this man wanted to justify his hate against them through his right belief and religious tradition. Immediately Jesus made the hated Samaritans to become the hero of his story, who showing mercy rescues a dying man and helps him recover from death, when the Jewish priest and Levite of the highest religious order by their belief and birth walked past him at that critical moment. So Jesus asked the law expert, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” In other words, Jesus was saying, our birth or right belief without God's help cannot save neither us from eternal death, nor the dying people who are critically in the state of emergency going towards death to be rescued by us. Only a heart change within us through God's help can make us accept His love and mercy towards us to love him back by showing the same towards every one whom we meet everyday in whatever situation of need they are in, so as to consider them to have been appointed by God as a neighbor to us because God has given us the potential to release His blessings through us as God's children in all areas of human existence like spiritual, soulish, physical, social and financial blessing and more.

THE BOTTOM LINE OF THIS STORY IS NOT 'WE MUST BE CHARITABLE' as every religion says, BUT RATHER WITHOUT GOD HELPING US AND SAVING US from sin nature WE CAN NEITHER LOVE GOD NOR LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS AS OURSELVES.

If we are saved children of God, we are told to show mercy to people the way God has showed in our lives by forgiving our sins freely through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you and praise you for saving me from sin and for forgiving me of all my past, present and future sins once and for all time in Christ Jesus. Help me show mercy to even strangers, who might be angels in disguise just like it happened in the life of Abraham where he entertained them without being fully aware of it. Help me consider every person who crosses my path daily to be my neighbor who should be shown mercy in order for me as your child to live and grow in your image and character which can only bring glory to you! Amen.

"When we are saved and live according to the Word of God, whether friends or foes, or whoever comes our way, we see that they are all appointed by God to be our neighbors in order that we may learn to show mercy to them who deserve it not, just like us who were shown mercy to be forgiven of our sins in Christ Jesus who deserve it not." — Abraham Israel
