Is My Salvation Really Eternal?
Q : Can God be trusted enough to throw my eternity in to His hands? Should I do something to maintain my salvation which I know is a free gift? What if I sin and lose my salvation? Could you please clear my doubt regarding this. Thanks.
A : "Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6, NKJV).
We took a poll in our website for the question "Do you believe that a believer can lose his salvation?". This is the surprising result that I got from the poll in which 100 people took part. 1) Yes - 31%, 2) No - 26%, 3) May be - 0%, 4) Never - 5%, 5) I don't know - 2%, 6) Yes, if he again falls in to sin willfully - 27% and 7) There is always a possibility - 9%. I was glad for the number of saints who believed "No and Never" consisting of at least 30%. All other saints have their own reasons for believing that we can lose our salvation. Most of the saints who live with out a concrete assurance that they cannot lose salvation are those who many times get self-condemned, become very critical towards others mistakes and many times fearful of where they might end up if they die with sin. It is good to work out our salvation with fear of God which is a gift (Isa 11:2-3), but it is not good to become fearful of death due to the bondage of sin (Php 2:12; Heb 2:15). When we believe Jesus first, we come in to a eternal union with Him and he gives us the guarantee seal of the Holy Spirit as a sign of it (John 6:39-40; 17:23; Eph 1:13-14). Once we are shifted supernaturally from darkness to light and the power of Satan to God, we the believers becomes a "light in the Lord" (Eph 5:8) and therefore a eternal union takes place at that point of time because of the forgiveness of sins with inheritance by faith as God's child (Acts 26:18). In Jesus through His sacrifice we have once and for all time have been made perfect in God's eyes (Heb 10:10, 14) and God cannot lie to again break His word as He is not a man (Num 23:19).
We can live an abundant life in Christ Jesus if we come to the understanding that we cannot lose our salvation as it is a eternal one. As it is Jesus who has begun this good work of salvation in us and that He will surely complete it on that day of rapture when we will all have a sinless glorious body (Heb 5:9; 1 Thes 4:14-18). Until then will we sin? Yes we will because of a sin nature within us with which we are born (Psa 51:5). On the other hand Apostle John warned both those people who said that they have not sinned in the past and those people who said that because they have been born again now they cannot fall in to sin again. The first category of people Apostle John have declared then to have made God a liar and the second category he had declared to have deceived themselves and thus have no truth in them (1 John 1:10, 8). But those who are aligned in the will of God are those who confess their sins the moment they become conscious of it and thus believe that God has forgiven them and have cleansed them from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). This is fellowship with God, the other side of union which can be lost and restored. Those who do this confession which restores fellowship with God regularly, will have enough confidence that they will not lose their salvation for eternity ahead as they believe that God is righteous and faithful to substitute Jesus' righteousness for them and take the spiritual garbage of sin that they bring to God through confessing it regularly. So the more we do this and grow in our faith towards God's faithfulness to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness, we will begin to understand that we cannot lose such a free gift of salvation that has been given to us purely by faith irrespective of our work for eternity ahead (Eph 2:8-9). The moment we say that we can lose our salvation, we are trying to add our works to maintain our salvation which is not the truth (Titus 3:5-6). We did not do anything to deserve salvation and also we cannot do anything to retain it. All we can do is to be grateful to God for the free eternal salvation and live as a bond-slave by giving our body as a living sacrifice to seek and extend the Kingdom of God on earth (Rom 12:1; Matt 6:33). I pray that God might give you a great understanding regarding this and help you co-operate with God to let Him do His work in you according to His own will and pleasure (Php 2:13). FALL IN TO THE HANDS OF OUR LOVING FATHER IN HEAVEN AND KNOW DEEP WITHIN THAT YOU CAN NEVER BE LOST FOR ETERNITY AS YOU HAVE COME TO HIM AND HAVE BECOME HIS CHILD THROUGH CHRIST JESUS FOREVER (JOHN 10:28-29).
