I would think that as AI advances and it's recognised as a new synthetic lifeform, legislative limits will be adjusted to subject AI to the law the same as humans are. And if that is the case, then "I suspect" that AIs will also have the right to defend themselves in a court of law.

You are absolutely right and also wrong... and you have taken things deeper to Ponder 🤔. Why we cannot take to Court a lifeless machine, legislative limits, I think, cannot be set at least right now and also in the future.... because whoever owns it should take responsibility for the malfunction of the Robots evil or wicked act. Even if the owner takes responsibility, to execute a lifeless matter means nothing big, as long as the funder or the owner of the robot 🤖 remains at loose not convicted for the offense.
What if the offender is the government? What if the one who did the dastardly act is a wicked majority? No justice can ever be done unless and until the one who decided to make the Robot act, through the first conception of the evil thoughts in their mind to cause destruction, is dealt with through the law of justice ⚖️, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. This is why Satan's act of evil, was not forgiven by God, while humans were by Jesus Christ (Heb 2:16; Ezekiel 28:15-17).
